Given the initial scintillating reviews, is the F12's real competition more like the Pagani Huyara or Bugatti Veyron at 3 times the price? It appears it will outclass the Aventador so what else is there as genuine competition? This must make it a relative bargain?

    I have two reactions:
    1. Years of watching automotive journalists have trained me to expect initial superlatives followed by contrived nit picking.
    2. Of the four cars you mention, the F12 seems different than the other three, being configured as an ultra-high performance front engined GT car. The other three are mid engined ..er... "specialty" cars.
But I guess that your larger point is that you don't have to spend nearly as much money to achieve performance approaching or exceeding the others. You can actually think about taking it on long distance trips with a companion and luggage and create a sensation when you arrive. After all, if the F12 is not enough exclusivity, just how much exclusivity does one need?

Agree that the initial reviews are always too favourable and the later ones get more realistic. But at least they are already criticizing the steering.

And it's hard to call a quarter million pound car a bargain.

I think you nailed it. It is a bit like fine wine. You can have an amazing bottle of wine for $200 and yet to get only marginally better, you probably have to spend $1,000+

There is no such thing as a Ferrari "bargain".

You get what you pay for. That's never a bargain.

You also have to consider that Lambo's generally are much better ***** magnets than Ferrari's and an Aventador in South Beach, LV or LA is a lock unlike an F12.

Any time when you can purchase a product which meets or exceeds the performance of a competing product for less money, then sure it's a bargain. Yeah, it's hard to rationalize a $400k (let's be honest, with options and tax, the purchase price will easily hit $400k) as a "bargain", but relative to the other three you listed, there's no question this is the car I would choose, regardless of cost.

Surely the Enzo replacement will do a better job of challenging the prices of Pagani and Bugatti. What's truly amazing is our collective ability to look at a $325k base price and think "wow, that's not so bad!".

The Aventador is a hypercar bargain... It provides all the supercar drama at half or even 1/3 of the price as the currenct high end exotics...

I'd like to know what car these "journalists" drive on a daily basis. They fling around flattering adjectives more than any group of people I have ever heard. Are they comparing the F12 to the Ford Fiesta they drive to the office? I'm sure it's a great car and all....

Best "chick" magnet for the money: Mercedes AMG. Nothing else comes close and everything else is just a waste of money.

I think the Aventador would be difficult to drive around town everyday in traffic like Miami. The 458 does this really well -- better than any other F car I've ever driven.

The F12 is the next wave of the 12 cylinder front engine cars. None of them have the outright sex appeal of 2 seat mid-engine cars. I don't think that's why people buy them.

They know who butters their bread. They need to be positive in their reviews and keep their criticisms diplomatic or they would not have a job for long.

I read the F12 is expected to outclass Aventador, it may outclass it in ring time by beating the 7.25 (Hopefully it does). If it doesn't lambo will have the faster car in the same category until Enzo or F458 lightweight comes out. 599 FXX is off course under 7 min but that's a race car.

I see where you are coming from but, it's hard to call a $400-500k car a "bargain"...

It seems like a bargain in the class of cars that provide this level of Visceral excitement and power. GTR is fast but not as exciting , Aventador seems like the only car that's a direct competitor in terms of price and performance . Pagani Huayra is turbocharged so may lack the same excitement of NA cars.

+1, twice. And the 2-seat MR engine cars are lighter, smaller, and easier to toss. I hope the successor to the 458 is smaller and lighter, with the same accommodations for two, just as the F12 is smaller and lighter than the 599.

I'd take the F12 over the Aventador in a heartbeat.
That's not to say I don't like the Aventador.
There's just something very special about 2-seater front-engined V12 Ferraris to my eyes...
    Matter of taste I suppose.
Not to mention that the Aventador could only dream of the F12's usability (or the 599's for that matter).

Some of the AMGs come with back seats or even two more doors. You know what that means...... :)

IMO if womens reactions have anything to do with what car you spend money on then those are the type of women I would want to stay away from.
As for the F12 I would take one over the Aventador as well. Hopefully someday I will truly have to make that decision lol.

I can see where you are coming from but it would only be a bargain if it had the performance the Nissan GTR has for it's price.

    +1. Agreed

I can't see a 400k car as a bargain. But for that price you get a FERRARI!!

I think the bargain of the century(new cars) is a Nissan GTR. It looks pretty good, it's a GT car, and it's fast. Idk about reliability or passion, though. My guess is less passion but I have no clue.

I think the F12 caries a lot of class and style. It'll make a good GT and it has a lot of power. Time will tell if it's a track monster or not.

I would be shocked if it is a track monster. It is probably front end heavy. Any woman who drops her panties for a Mercedes is nuts.
