Are botnets now targeting Macs? Are users going to have to start purchasing third party security software now? http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=3157
Hmmm.... IF you choose to *steal* software via illegal torrent sites you deserve all you get IMHO. Someone summed it up quite well in the "talkback": However, to somewhat address the Q - Be careful out there and I don't believe you'll have any trouble / need to load all the BS anti-whatever stuff you've *got* to have with Windows. My 02c, Cheers, Ian
I downloaded a third party converter and got a trojan. I realized it wasn't the smartest thing but I really thought there was no viruses of any kind for Macs. It didnt do any real damage but it really was an annoyance. Oh well, I guess it was my fault
Mind sharing the details and where from? "Legitimate" sites are generally pretty good. Hopefully you *howled* in disgust at the source? versiontracker is generally my #1 choice btw - FWIW. Yes and no (IMHO) - If you can't trust the stuff you download, what can you trust? We've all got downloaded S/W installed..... Cheers, Ian
Reports are coming in now that this is a cross species virus. My PC has it, and now insists upon wearing black turtle neck shirts and blue jeans.
I've got zero AV or whatever installed on my Vista PC. The only virus I've ever gotten was one that I compiled from source and ran myself, and that was in 2002 or so. Built in software firewall off, built in defender off. Zero issues. In this day and age, security isn't so much about OS, but about user. A user with their head up their arse will screw up *any* OS. Trusted sites...I have maybe 4 or 5, but I still run them through my VM that is armed to the teeth and nuts....haven't found anything yet, but why take the chance? Stuff that I've grabbed from torrents just for ****zengiggles so far has a 100% hit rate for being infected. At this point, I'm not talking to Fast_Ian, but to the general populace. Free software become a whole lot less free at $75 an hour to get your data (nudies folder, 134.7 GB, collection of which has been compiled over 5.2 years) back than to order direct than paying marginal fees from the companies that actually make the programs. No big shock are the number of pirated Photoshop CS v.xxx installs that come laden to the yard-arm with malware. No surprise then, when the ship sinks. I used to rescue data for a fee...and crack passwords, too. Not a bad way to churn up beer money, until the fateful day that I recovered a 19.6 GB folder labeled garycolemanfakes. My life has not been the same since.
I downloaded some converter (don't remember the name exactly but it had to do with something like mp4 converter. I downloaded it off isohunt. I was just under the impression that the word virus covered all this, and a Mac was immune.
