How's the maintenance schedule on H1's? I've heard that it can be a killer, but I don't have any real-world experience.

Wow... I didn't realize you could pick them up that cheap, even with the miles, rebuilt engine, etc.

Fire Engine Red? Yes, I've driven one of those back in 1994, when they were first released to the public (civilians). It was... quite amazing what it could do, and people had no idea what to think of it. That was of course, just under 13 years ago.

    Good, unload it fast....

Just a few years ago I ran a Hummer offroad club, we had about 250 members in the greater L.A. area...I started the club, built it, ran offroad events and even got involved in a Hummer magazine.

Listen to me carefully: unload that fat tubby b!tch before it falls apart on you. I'm sorry, but those things are POS. Every event we had, if there were more then 4 H1's would could guarantee a breakdown!!! The '94 will have lots of issues....beside being grossly underpowered, the idler arm, pitman arm, u-joints, half-shafts, transfer case & tranny are constantly subject to failure. If I had a nickel for everytime an H1 broke down I'd be rich...

Yes...the CTIS is cool...you can inflate/deflate on the fly, but they leak and create problems.

Yes...the gear-driven hubs keep the differential up high and offer great clearance, but they are still prone to high-centering. The approach & departure angle is nice, but the size & girth of the vehicle sucks when it comes to articulating through tight trails. Speaking of articulation, the suspension has very little; it takes nothing to get a wheel in the air.....and you don't want to do that because:

IT HAS NO LOCKING DIFFERENTIALS, POSI-TRACTION OR LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL...one tire slipping and that axle is done offering traction. They attempt to compensate by using a technique called Brake-Throttle-Modulation where....nevermind, just trust me...it's lame.

Everyone expects these things to be amazing and they're not. They're load, slow, very uncomfortable, impractical and heavy. Yeah, sometimes their low center of gravity can be cool and their extreme approach/departure angles come in handy.....but the frequency of problems is beyond alarming.

It's a Highly-Mobile-Multi-Wheeled-Vehicle (HMMWV)....it was intended as a platform for the military to use for ambulences, machine guns, missle launcher, fuel truck, water truck, personal carrier, etc, etc, etc: it was NOT intended nor designed to be the offroad trail billygoat that any built Jeep or Toyota can be. Try to offroad them and they bust under their own weight and poor design.

A '94 is a very antiquated design with LOTS of problems. UNLOAD UNLOAD UNLOAD....I sure hope you didn't pay more then $32,000 tops....

    It must be a gasser?

I was going to say $25k - $28k but I wanted to leave a margin so you didn't feel ripped-off.

Dude...seriously; give that antiquated beast to your worst enemy asap and know you've avenged yourself! :)

I thought all H1's were diesel. First 6.5, then 6.6 Duramax.

First versions were 6.2 until 1994 or 1995 then a 6.5 until 1996 when it was a 6.5 Turbo until the last year build (alpha) which was a 6.6

Steve, thanks for all of the info. Aside from the problems that you described, how is scheduled maintenance? I've heard it is quite expensive as well.

early H1's had plenty of shortcomings... but as a "swear-by the big ol' SOB" H1 alpha owner I can assure you that those final models in '06 are AWESOME. Unlike 99.9% per cent of Hummer owners, and PS I do not consider H2s or H3s hummers at all, I actually take my H1 offroad for real... I dont mean through a sand lot next to the mall. I have gone nearly vertical up a mountain... crossed rivers at least 2 ft deep, etc. and that big ol ***** does not stop. I do not know why they even put a winch on them I could not imagine the hell hole you would have to bury it in to even think of deploying a winch recovery.

old H1s... underpowered and unreliable... but you cannot put an alpha in the same ballpark.

This always confused me, though I thought it had differentials that you could lock in Hi/low range.

Anyhow, why no LSD or viscous coupling? GM had a really great one that they used to use in the Denali and Escalade up to about 02, I think it was the NGV-149, then suddenly they pulled it from everything except the Denali pickups and replaced it with an open differential, ABS computer controlled design for their all-wheel drive vehicles.

Does the old transfer case bold up to the H2 or H1? Most of the trannies are the same right?

Forgive my lack of knowledge on this one, just curious as I have been SUV shopping for a few months again, though I think I'm going with another Landcruiser/LX470 (which have open diff's now too apparently)
