I don't know of anyone that will make a vintage style plate using modern tag numbers, but I think New York will actually allow you to register your car to a set of vintage plates. I know of a 330 GT that is registered with very cool 1964 World's Fair New York plates.

Vintage plates can be found on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=Vintage+New+York+License+plate+pare&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.A0.H0.XVintage+New+York+License+plate+pair.TRS1&_nkw=Vintage+New+York+License+plate+pair&_sacat=0

I guess it depends on what look you are going for. If you want new plates in vintage style, then getting a newly made plate to match your number is better (although I wonder if that is legal in every state). If you want true vintage plates, then many states will allow you to change your existing registration so that it uses the tag number on your vintage plates. I think many states allow the registration of vintage tags, but I don't know if Michigan is one of them.

I was going to look into getting vintage plates in NJ, but the 60's NJ plates look about the same as the new ones (NJ is a boring state) and the modern "historic" plates allow you to use only the rear plate.
