I got an email today... In eight years I have finally hit a "made up" cap of $10,000 in purchases from Pay Pal and they want to cut off my pay pal account that is linked to my credit card (they've been trying to get my bank account number for years).

So they want my bank account information, but the insane part is they said because I have spent money and have a 8 year history, now they have to verify me? WTF? I guess my track history is not sufficient for them to see I always pay my bills. Sorry, PayPal is not someone I feel comfortable trusting with a bank account number based on this stupid logic alone :D (Who makes this stuff up?)

So is there anyway around this? I buy fun hobby stuff on Ebay with Pay Pal, so nothing important... I only use it because its easy and convenient. I don't want to get any further tangled with Pay Pal financially, as they aren't exactly a company you can call and reach a live person when something goes wrong.

Here's the email form Pay Pal-
"We wanted to let you know that you're just $900.00 USD away from hitting your initial PayPal sending limit of $10,000.00 USD. This is the maximum amount of money you can send or use for purchases before you need to become Verified.

Why do I need to verify my account?

We place initial limits on all accounts to increase security and help prevent fraud. Once you link and confirm a bank account or get approved for PayPal credit, your account will be Verified and you'll be able to make as many payments as you like with PayPal. How do I get Verified and remove my sending limit?

Log in to your PayPal account at www.paypal.com and click Get Verified at the top of the page.

Follow the instructions to link your bank account to your PayPal account. We'll deposit 2 small amounts in your bank account to confirm that it's yours.
Check your bank statement in 2-3 days and note the 2 amounts. Then log back in to your PayPal account and enter these amounts.
    Remove Limit
    Sincerely,
    PayPal"

Why not just open a new paypal account? Use a new CC, with a new email account at Gmail.

PayPal can be pretty damn intrusive. If they were paying you, I don't think you'd get away without a checking account to link to.

Have they asked for your Social Security number yet?

Back when I was using paypal, I set up a separate bank account just for that use, and for the CC# I used a debit card linked to that same account. When I wanted to buy something I'd move funds into the account, otherwise it held an almost zero balance with ability to pull funds from my real account.

    ^^ this.

I did the same thing, set up a separate bank account, for overseas wire transfers.
Works great. I keep maybe $100 in it until it is time to transfer money.
I have this separate account visible in my online web banking profile, so doing transfers to & from is very easy to do.

If you have a good relationship with your local banker, they will do this for you for free.

Might be a Big Brother thing? When you go to use your PayPal account they try to discourage paying from a CC account as evidenced by making the CC choice harder to find. Could be an attempt to force you to use a bank account link more? Maybe it's easier to dispute charges if a CC is used and they'd rather discourage that? At any rate, I'd set up a separate account like others have said if you don't want to deal with it.

Thanks everyone... just wondering if there was a way around it, before having to set up another bank account.

This is what I do. I do not give anybody the ability to access my bank account.

Gmail accounts are free and I have at least a couple more that paypal does not of know yet. They count is the dollar volume for the email account before asking for the verification.

My opinion is it has something to do with the know your customer laws where transactions over certain dollar amounts have to be tracked, verified, and or reported.
