There are owners who can only purchase preowned Ferraris. And there are others who can buy new Ferraris at a dealership or buy new models at will. Are the two owners very different on how they perceive Ferrari?

I don't know what you mean by "can only purchase preowned Ferraris". Many older cars are more expensive than brand new ones.

    Josh,

The world is much more complex than you outline.

There are people who have lots of money and buy new cars.
There are people who have lots of money and buy older cars.
There are people who have little money and buy new cars.
There are people who have little money and buy older cars.
Most 'new' cars are really used cars.
Most people on Fchat are car guys regardless of the age of the car or their cash flow scenario.

I think he is tring to say that there are people that can only afford to buy lets say Ferrari's that are under $100,000 and others that can just buy new ones at will.

For example someone is going to buy the new FXX for $2,000,000+ not all of us can write a check for that we have to buy a less expensive car. Do these two different type of people view their Ferrari in the same way.

I do not know the answer to the question and quite frankly I am curious what you guys think. Maybe someone that was only able to afford a less expensive Ferrari that is now able to purchase a New one could shed some light on this question.

People buy what they like, period.

Some Ferrari owners can "afford" much more than they have actually spent.

Not in all cases, but i know what you mean:

Those that buy a Ferarri because it reflects their wealth and status and would not know what a 288 was except, it's a used car, not interested. Now when's my next bonus due?

And those that buy a Ferrari purely because it's a Ferrari, rich or not, 308 or 430, and hell yes we'll take a 288 please :)

I got a totally different meaning from the question....

I think what was meant that there are people that can order/buy a new ferrari or the rest of us that can't.
I would love to go to the dealer and pay STICKER PRICE for a NEW F430 that I ordered. But that ain't going to happen. I have no idea on HOW to do it.
But the guy down the street is driving a new one every 6 months and turning it back in.
How do I get to be that guy??? The answer is not write a check.

Yes, there are two kinds of owners:

Those who love the marque (and know a thing or two about it) and

    those who love the bling-bling

    Not many bling-bling owners on F-Chat. . .

This is the best and truest response by far! Buy what you like . . . our preference is for the classic 2+2 unloved Ferrari over a "modern" Ferrari. The last thing on my mind is owning a Ferrari just for wealth and status - it's owned because it's a neat car with a tremendous amount of history.

Yes there ARE. Those who paid attention in English class and them what didnt.

    Sorry, pet peeve :p

My take on the question is: some people buy Ferraris because they are so rich they can afford any car and think of a Ferrari is a status symbol: they put one in their garage and take it for a leisurely drive on occasions when the right people will see them in it. Those types will never find their way to Fchat.

The other type appreciates a Ferrari as a CAR, and drives it in a spirited manner. They may or may not have the money to buy the latest and most fashionable, but they are willing to make whatever sacrifices are necessary to own the best they can and take good care of it.

Then there are people like me who are just too damn cheap to pay more than a few thousand dollars for a car but still manage to find some good ones and have a lot of fun. I would have to be very rich and have everything else I wanted (a proper race car for one) before a Ferrari would be at the top of my list, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate them, just that I have other priorities.

I think the two types of owners have different expectations. The new car buyer wants an exotic that will have warranty coverage and few (if any) mechanical problems. Many of the 'used' car buyers are fulfilling a dream and want to express their love of the marque, or enjoy working on their cars to some degree. Put me down as the 'used' car buyer.

I think that you could find two type of users...

But not for the money they spent into their car, but only why their bought their car...

    1) bling bling
    2) passion...

And in each category, you could find people that had spent $50,000 or $500,000....

I usually only buy used Ferraris. The way I see it the 512TR/ 512M was the high point in automotive design from looks alone. I havent seen anything from Any manufacturer that surpasses a 512TR in looks. the 575 is nice but it looks too Corvette & I like my engine in the middle. My F40 is a classic, I'm totally uninterested in the Schmenzo or the 612.

The 430 spyder is nice but my Slutmobile is nicer :)

    Let's see...

There are the "poor" people who have the 308/328/Mondial/308 GT4 type cars, do most or all their own wrenching and are huge car guys. A few have a shop do all the work but most seem to only leave belts to them.

There are the 328-348+ owners who may do a little wrenching but also have their mechanic on speed dial. You can fix some stuff yourself, others you can't unless you're really into tools and equipment.

There are the 360/550+ guys who usually don't wrench because there's not a lot to do outside of broken wires and such.

There are the collectors who have lots of cars including a Ferrari or two. What's a wrench?

There are the vintage owners who may or may not do their own wrenching; but regardless most have deep pockets. They wrench because they love to, not because they have to. Although with the "lesser" vintage cars, you almost have to do your own work or you'll go broke over a car with "only" 5 figures of value. The pre 1960's cars are almost always taken care of by men with white gloves in a sterile room.

There are minor catagories as well: the oil baron's son who buys a Ferrari on a whim; the dealer who drives a different Ferrari every few months...

One thing I noticed lately is to buy a new Ferrari in some dealerships you have to give them a Ferrari (and a late model one preferably) to legitimately have a chance on getting the new car. Therefore, the owner that turns over cars every couple years seem to dominate the waiting lists rather than the guy who just shows up at the dealership, wants a 430 and probably will keep it for ten years before moving on to something else. Its that second guy thats almost has to buy used cars in the secondary market because he'll unlikely get to chance to ever spec a car himself. I know this is one reason why some Ferrari owners have jumped ship to Lambo.

I think there are 2 types, the modern buyers and the not so modern buyers. To me prior to the 308 and tr is the not so modern guys. I don't think money is the issue with these guys and many of these cars are more money and are going up in value. I am a Techno Freak and I like the new stuff. I would love to own a vintage Ferrari but I'm not sure I have the Patience for it. It would be easier if I was a Mechanic or lived close to a really good shop. I like everything on my car to be perfect and that is a never ending job on a vintage car.
The guys who buy the modern cars also lose more money on them except for the guys who sell a new 430 etc. They made only 1000 daytonas more or less and they hold their value.

    I agree with this guy.
Ferrari is the top brand for sports cars so the rich who want to show off buy the newest Ferrari's and the purist also buy new Ferrari's but a purist will buy a old one too, and a rich guy who just wants to show off would never buy a 308 etc.
