Interesting spider in our house today. Actually hard to catch as it was quick and jumping around. Finally got it. Not sure if it's a black widow or not. It doesn't have an "hourglass", but it meets the other descriptions of about dime size and it has the orange markings described as being the female Black Widow... Orange on top of hour glass and bottom has two separate orange marks, but not connected. It's dead in the pic, so the legs are balled up. The second picture is from a website I was looking at. Reading up on them, they don't sound as nasty as the Brown Recluse, which we have too.

Think this is a Black Widow?

    Don't think so Rob.....

Note how in the pic the Black widow has a smooth glassy apearance, while you dead specimen is furry all over.

Give yours some resusitation and release it back to the wild. It may be a Federally protected species. :)

    OK...Spider Trivia Time!

How high could Michael Jordon jump if he were a spider?
If Michael Jordan could jump proportionately as high as a jumping spider, he would be able to dunk on a 260-foot-high rim.

How did theTarantula get its name?
The tarantula was named after the Italian seaport city of Taranto, where the hairy venomous wolf spider once abounded.

What are the largest and smallest spiders?
The largest spider is the South American tarantula, as big as a dinner plate and heavy as a stick of butter. The smallest is the Comb-footed spider, smaller than the head of a pin.

Were any spiders harmed during the filming of Spiderman?
More than 150 spiders were used in the laboratory scene in the movie "Spider-Man." An assistant auditioned spider actors picking the ones with the most predictable behavior, as the Humane Society looked out for their welfare. The movie's bug consultant, Steve Kutcher, stated that no spiders were harmed.

    How many spiders are there?
Scientists have identified 37,000 spider species worldwide, (2,500 species in the United States and Canada). Spiders first appeared on Earth 400 million years ago - about 170 million years before the first dinosaurs.

    Why isn't a Daddy Long-Legs a spider?
A Daddy Long-legs doesn't make silk, it is a scavenger and not a predator. It doesn't have a narrow waist or complex sex organs, but, like a spider, it is an arachnid.

Maybe I'm wrong in my guess, but it helps that an uncle collected bugs and his sister married an entymologist. They'd get cut off mid-conversation at the dinner table.

With the size of the afro, looks more like a Black Panther spider.

Actually, looks more like a "false black widow" - steatoda grossa - which hangs out as far as Texas.

Rob, Can you get a little closer and in focus with the picture?

Can you post it higher resolution? after all there must be some benefit to owning the place. So we can get a good look? Is that a Prancing Horse on its back?

And whatever the outcome, I friggin' hate spiders, but I have a real affection for spyders.

its not a black widow. if you would like some to play with i can mail you about 100000000000000000000 of them since they are all over the place in my garage. even when i find them crawling on me, they dont seems to be too prone to bite unless they get in your clothes. i got bit by a brown recluse and the area swelled up like a boob and started to rot. had to have it scooped out and minor plastic surgury. i was 11 at the time. did not feel it get me either, then it felt like a wasp sting and got worse. @!#!#$% bugs.

That's not a black widow. Most balck widows are *fairly* slow, and catching a picture of them is not hard.

Also, black widow spiders have long, spindly legs - the little thing you've taken a photo of has legs that are too short.

No, that's not a black widow. The hour glass on a widow is very distinctive. There is no mistaken a black widow when you see it. Their web is easly to recognize after you see one. I had a new house in Arizona that became a magnet for the black widow. I finally sold to the house to get away from the spiders. Black widows can be deadly to children and the elderly.

This guy is dead, that's why the legs are curled up under it. The head is the same size as abdomen. So this probably isn't a Black Widow, but it's orange marks on the abdomen sure looked like some Black Widow pics I've seen.

    LA for now,NJ really

There is something very wrong about this story. The area started to rot???? Scooped out??? Please elaborate, did you not have it checked out for months? Is this an unusual case for a brown recluse bite?? I feel sick.

It's not that unusual. One of my old neighbors was bitten by one and had the same kind of thing happen. Very nasty.

The brown recluse is very poisonous. And the bite does swell up quite a bit, and if not treated it could kill you.

The poison from the Brown Recluse rots away your tissue. That's why I said it's nasty compared to just a wasp type bite of a Black Widow.

    I found it!

It's a Phidippus audax or common name Bold Jumper.

    Jumping spiders

Jumping spiders, all of which are in the family Salticidae, are among the most interesting spider groups to watch. Jumping spiders come in many sizes and color patterns. Active hunters during the day, they have good eyesight, relying primarily on movement to locate prey. They stalk their prey before attacking in a fast leap. Jumping spiders put out a line of webbing when they jump and can sometimes be seen dangling from this silken dragline after a leap that fails.

Many jumping spiders are bold, stocky and often brightly colored. They often have conspicuous bands of black and white on their bodies or legs. Others have velvety red abdomens and some even have metallic colors on the chelicerae. Jumping spiders have eight eyes, with one large pair in the front. Like most spiders, jumping spiders are not considered hazardous to humans and are unlikely to bite unless cornered or handled.

The bold jumper, Phidippus audax, is one of the most common and conspicuous of the jumping spiders. It is black with a distinct irregular orange to white spot on the back of the abdomen. It can be found in gardens and around homes.

those were the facts. i was 11 or so, i did not think anything about bieng bitten by " something" as we would come back from the woods EVERY DAY here in GA and pick the ticks off our clothes and a few that were just starting to get into the top layer of skin.( nail polish remover makes them go full reverse so the heads dont stay in and make you sick ) i have been bit by several non poisonous snakes and a bunch of wasps, and spiders. ill tell ya another thing damn yellow jackets chased me on a DIRT BIKE and stung the crap out of a bunch of us one time.......

( spider...) i waited 4 days before i told the parental unit that something is wrong, "it keeps getting worse" as the flesh rotted from the center out. they cut out a cone of flesh with a very long thin blade. and took a skin graft from my thigh to hide it. the brown recluse is very common, very small, and the poison turns everything it contacts into a flesh "soup" , which is how most spiders eat thier prey, they suck out the liquified insides like a Mcdonalds milkshake. sleep well!!

(QUOTE) "Initially, the bite may feel like a pinprick or go unnoticed. Some may not be aware of the bite for 2 to 8 hours. Others feel a stinging sensation followed by intense pain. Infrequently, some victims experience general systemic reactions that may include restlessness, generalized itching, fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, or shock. A small white blister usually initially rises at the bite site surrounded by a swollen area. The affected area enlarges and becomes red, and the tissue is hard to the touch for some time. The lesion from a brown recluse spider bite is a dry, blue-gray or blue-white, irregular sinking patch with ragged edges and surrounding redness--termed the "red, white, and blue sign." The lesion usually is 1½ inches by 2¾ inches or smaller. Characteristics of a bite are further discussed at http://www.ama-assn.org/amednews/2002/08/05/hlsa0805.htm.

The bite of the brown recluse spider can result in a painful, deep wound that takes a long time to heal. Fatalities are extremely rare, but bites are most dangerous to young children, the elderly, and those in poor physical condition. When there is a severe reaction to the bite, the site can erupt into a "volcano lesion" (a hole in the flesh due to damaged, gangrenous tissue). The open wound may range from the size of an adult's thumbnail to the span of a hand. The dead tissue gradually sloughs away, exposing underlying tissues. The sunken, ulcerating sore may heal slowly up to 6 to 8 weeks. Full recovery may take several months and scarring may remain
    old & Structural Pests "
