What do you think of this 92 512TR on Ebay?...
What do you think of this 92 512TR on Ebay? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ferrari-FERRARI-512TR-1992-FERRARI-512TR-SUPER-CLEAN-LOW-RESERVE_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6212QQitemZ4566467695QQrdZ1 It says the reserve is low at less than $80k. The big downside is that it has a rebuilt title. A nice 94 512TR is available for around $104k with no title problems. Is it worth that much more??? Opinions. BT
First off let me just say the 512TR is probably my favorite car of all time. I had a Porsche 968 coupe that had a rebuilt title, I didn't know it when I owned the car - thank you very much Luxury Motors! I traded it in a couple of years later on a Boxster, I get a call over 6 weeks later saying it has a "rebuilt" title (they sold it to a wholesaler and he ran a car fax) and that I was to come up with $5,000 more. That was based on the $11,500 I got on a trade. There's a big difference when reselling the car even if it was repaired properly. I think $80,000 is a fair price on that car, but not much more than that. You considering it for real or just swatting ideas around in your head?
the color is definitely more desirable/marketable. the recent major service is a plus (make sure seller define "recent"....some consider within 3 years is recent). w/ that said, if his reserve is in the high $70k, i think you would be better off with a clean car....if it's in the low $70, then it's probably ok...assuming PPI checks out. i had a 92 512TR black/tan w/ 29k (less desirable color combo than red/tan), complete major engine out service at MAG (midwest auto group), clean title....it was sold for $83k about a year ago. good luck w/ your search.
Run away unless you can get it for $50K. If the damage was as minor as described then why does it have a rebuild/salvage title? Buy one with a fully documented, no stories history and you'llbe much happier. - Will
The rule is: always buy th ebst car you can afford, never less! Trying to get a deal if you can afford more, will in the long (and sometimes the very shor term, cost you more. Time and time again this is evident and F cars are probably more susceptible than most.
Run...don't walk away...unless you can get it for 50k and be willing to give it away later on. Better yet buy my friend Eddie's 512 TR http://www.sportauto.cc/inventory_ferrari/july05fer92red/index.htm Steve
Bill.... I looked seriously at that car. It can be had for $76K. However, if you look at the very poor alignment of the engine cover, and the two rear quarter panels ................ I think the original damage to the car is alot more than they are letting on. (Not to mention the way the rear glass is cracked. I eventually passed, and bought a clean one from Naples Motorsports.
Thanks for all the input. I really think the 512TR is my favorite car. I guess I will build the new garage for the existing Fcar (348) then if business is good maybe I can add the 512 to the mix instead of doing a buy / sell. I know I was glad I waited for a good 348 to come along, I must resist the temptation of snappingup a cheap one. Hope the wife doesn't read this post... BT
I can fully relate! I am on my 5th 512TR .............. and my last! This one is here to stay this time. Four times before I got sucked into the buy/sell mode, always wanting the newest F-Car. Each time I found myself going back to the 512TR. 13 years later, and it still makes my heart race ................... Take my silly advice, take your time and find the "right" one ............ then hold onto it.
Definately, the 512TR/512M are the best Ferrari road cars ever Well the F50 is nice, the F40 is cool too but I still like the 512TR even better than the F40 The new 430 spyder is very nice but its missing the wild looks of the TRs
The rebuilt title is one of many ways to hide a stolen car. In this case, the obvious misaligned panels probably just mean a legitimate wrecked car, but you never know...sometimes stolen cars *are* wrecked, after all. Ditto for grey market F-cars that come in on Temporary Import Bonds. After 4 years you are supposed to *destroy* or export such a vehicle, but there are shady ways around that sort of thing. None of which you want to be caught up in. Car Fax is great. You can see when the crooks have picked up "duplicate" titles (one of the ways to hide a stolen or wrecked vehicle). You can tell when the car has or hasn't been licensed/tagged each year (a strong hint of lack of maintenance), etc.
Can you point them out to me? (Just copy a picture into MS paint) I would like to know for my own sake of getting better at picking up on that. Thanks for any help you can provide.
