Is this a good price on a '92?

I noticed this on the Sports Car Company website:
'92 512 TR, 31K miles, silver/black, $69.5

Is this a good price? Does anyone have any knowledge of this one?

How long have you been looking at TRs? You want a TR, drive one and see if you like it, if so; find one, buy it, enjoy it. Buy a car and enjoy it, stop worring about a deal, none of them are. There are good cars, but no real deals, because anyone with a decent car is not going to sell at the bottom.

My opinion, all iterations of the TR may still go down in price as mait is extreme and most cannot do it themselves, so it limits their market - can afford to buy one, but can't afford to service it. All ferraris are expensive to own, some will make a grown man cry.

 

Asute observation. Really on point for the quality of stuff we can buy now amid the financial mood. Yet we disagree on that last part, as the TR is less extreme in maintenance. Maybe 'way less', but I've nothing but circumstantial evidence.

The car you've found is a great buy; tons of car, looks, panache, and occasion for not much money. Get the PPi and get the car. Long live the undervalued TR.

 

That particular 512TR...I think....has been discussed here before. If I remember, that car may have a lot of track history. Also...I believe it was said that the motor in that car was modified for more compression, and had subsequent head gasket problems. Lastly....look closely at the pictures, and you will see that the front hood and fenders are a slightly different shade of silver then the rest of the car....possiblty a crash on the track and some repair was needed. Definately get a PPI done, because they have had this car for sale for quite some time.

Yes, maintenance is very expensive but it's all relative. If you want insane maintenace....my Lamborghini Diablo VT Roadster is something else. Oh...both cars are driven as absolute daily drivers...

The Testarossa is a very mechanical non computer dependent car. Problems can be solved with alot of patience and all the great help from this...the BEST section on Fchat...

Plus....it's a Testarossa....the most extravagant, over the top Ferrari EVER made !

IMO all ferraris are expensive to own. I have a 308 QV, have been doing all my own mait for the last 7+ years and it's still an expensive car to own. The undeniable plus in the TR market is you can buy a iconic 12 cylinder supercar for under 80K, but I feel the mait is a growing concern for many and so many more cars come into the equation at 80K it really hurts the market for them and most older, large-production-run, modern Ferraris. With large prodcution numbers and many cars still around they are not the great investment so many here want to believe may happen.

I don't own any cars as investments. I have been lucky and some cars I own are worth more than I paid for them, but no one in their right mind would have put the amount of money in them as an investment, the return is just way too little. I don't have the money for the cars I would even consider as a potential investment/speculation. So when these folks come on here and keep trying to get a bargain or some deal. I try and stop the insanity immediately and just get them to focus on do you want to drive a Ferrari in your lifetime, and if so, which one is going to give you a smile. Once that is determined the money becomes irrelavant because even a $30K 308 will cost money to own if you want them to run right and not look tired and neglected - those ferraris are always sad looking.
Anyway hope this person figures out which model they want and makes the leap after doing some homework on the car and not buying with their heart, I believe most of us who have, never regret it.

The realistic price on this 1992 512TR with 30K is $47,000 all the money in the world.

 

This TR is on Ebay for ages...
It may worth $69 if you must have one... you can get a lower mileage 360 for that price... but if you are looking for a classic to be... the TR is the one to have.
Must be a reason why this car is not selling...??? Tracked ?

I will take a TR over 360 all day long. Even if they were the same price. Why? well, you have to own a TR for you to know the answer.

 

Thanks for the feedback. That's why this site is so great! I'm not going to touch the silver one. I'm still getting my head around the Testarossa ownership experience but have always been drawn to them. While the relatively low entry price is certainly a plus, I am not expecting it to be cheap to maintain either. I'm no stranger around the garage though, and frankly one think I like about the "older"/80's and earlier 90's vintage cars is that they're modern enough to be relatively efficient and reliable (at least once they're sorted) they are still simple enough for someone like me to understand and debug most of the time. I'd kind of like to have a project from time to time -- I think doing belts would be a great project. It has to be the right car though!

One advantage of owning a TR over a newer Ferrari is the TR up to 1992 did not have OBD, no main computer, just two Engine Control Units.

No codes, no chips, basic Bosch CIS injection that is the same as what is found on Porsches.

Easier for the do-it-your-selfer.

Boy I'l tell ya what. If I had the cash for this TR it would be on its way to my garage regardless of issues. The momo can be fixed and the carrier replaced for 20-30k and its done. Look at this thing...aint gunna be anymore...its beautiful. 360 at 1/3rd less price is never going to match up to a 512 TR. My dad always said that a fool and his money were soon parted...sign me up.

There are 512s out there with a better history than this for the same money, and less rework.
According to other threads this one has been tracked and pulled apart a few times.

It does look good in that color and those wheels. I would love to have one like it.
