I have read aboat compression tests in Ferrarichat.com and I see that many say it's normal to have aboat 180 PSI on a 308. What aboat this test: Cylinder number 1 : 159,5 psi 2 : 162,4 psi 3 : 163,9 psi 4 : 159,5 psi 5 : 159,5 psi 6 : 158,1 psi 7 : 159,5 psi 8 : 159,5 psi The test is from a 1977 308GTB dry sump whith 80 000 km. Can this be because of the cam? Or the speed when it's tested? I mean the test is good, but it's not as high as many say it should be. This test is on one car I am going to loock at, and if it's good I hope I can buy. Have someone a good explanation on this?
I second what Sean said. The actual number is almost meaningless, especially on cars like these, because as you alluded, the cams timing does play a part, and on these it can be set anywhere. Generally the consensus is a 10% variance from the highest to the lowest, and your motor actually is showing barely a 3% difference. I would be very happy to see cylinders that close on ANY engine, and I am sure you will find no disagreement from anyone here.
