why? -- because it was leaking? ;)

Seriously, it just looks like a (somewhat desperate) external repair. If it wasn't leaking when you removed it, I think you'd have to say it worked. What is the material? Some sort of JBWeld sealant?

The cover may have been cracked due to improper torquing during re-installation.

The sloppy welds were a quick fix and coverup.

This pictures were given to me after the major was done, a "friend" made sure I got them. I don't have a clue about the material and this is from a 7,000 mile car that I bought.

That looks like a really sloppy TIG weld.

Those pictures are from an Alumaloy infomercial....first they repaired a Grumman 17 ft canoe with just a zippo & a few Alumaloy sticks...then they re-attached the port side bomb bay door of a B29 using 6 sticks and a propane torch...and finally fixed that piece of a TR motor that someone had cracked a piece off while trying to free it with a crowbar ;)

This is a great sloppy (in spanish, "chapuza") with two components epoxy mastic.
I have a short question, do you know the translation of your nick name?
    Regards.
