Gang, Long time lurker from the 348/355 forum and now owner of a 3-pedal 360 Spider. Could use your advice. Been thinking about adding a 575 to the stable. A gated 6spd 575 is my dream spec but beyond my wallet so looking for a well-priced F1-fitted driver that I can convert to manual over time. To make the math work, I want to stay at or under $100k and, happily, there are a few examples in the market buyable in that neighborhood. They each have pros and cons. One in particular has been sitting on a dealer lot for -- I kid you not -- 3 years. Which is a bit of a red flag. It's been passed around like an hors d'oeuvres tray between every dealer and auction in the country, it seems. It's been run through Mecum twice (in Vegas 2022 and in Monterey 2023) with no sale. It was even the car used in The Smoking Tire video from 3 years ago when Porsche Colorado Springs had it. (Zach Kaplan driving, link is here Here are the yellow flags: No service records whatsoever, no tools, no car cover, interior condition is tired and there are myriad cosmetic issues to address. Last belt service was 14 years ago (2010), so that has to get done ASAP. Needs all new fluids, tires, plugs, new battery, motor mounts. Because it's been sitting in the elements for three years (crazy, amirite?), all the weatherstripping is perished, the windshield wiper arms are sun damaged, the hood cowl is faded, and the airbag leather is faded and scuffed. The rear parcel shelf leather is pulling away from the rear window and torn in places. Doing a back-of-the-envelope calculation, it probably needs $15k to make everything right, but let me know if you think that figure is off. Here is the walk-around video I shot today: As a 575, it's a base model in every way. No handling pack, no shields, stock wheels. The color combo is also an acquired taste: silver over silver/grey. Not great. The best thing about the 575 is the modest 15k miles and the price: $85k. VIN is ZFFBV55A730130839. From what research I've done, I found nothing alarming. Carfax appears to be clean and unremarkable. So here's the ask: Has anyone come across this 575? Any reason it's been sitting for 3 years? Why has everyone to date passed on it? Is there a mechanical grenade lurking under the hood. It's possibly the lowest priced 575 in the country so it is intriguing for me, but I wanted to first bring it to the group to see if this car is well-known to people here and, if so, whether there is a reason it's been sitting and whether I should avoid it or dig in further. Would really appreciate any input and guidance. Thanks all, ketel
Hi Ketel. Just buy it. In one year with a fun process of learning the car, you will have it sparkling again. These cars are really solid, and you will have a car more beautiful than the newer V12s and can cruise around California for another twenty rears! Interior is easy to fix. The seats looks great. Don't think of every Ferrsri as an concours winner which have to be perfect. Think of it as a part of your life which can make life much more exciting. And nobody's life is perfect. I feel the silver color is amazing on these cars. Interior might not be very exciting but a light colored interior is good in warm climates. You could change the color of it or get another interior. I sold a 550 interior to a member here who put it in his 575. Maybe you can buy his old 575 interior. It was in good condition. Just wrong color. Erik
As a long term 575 owner, my WAG with this car, I would say I would feel lucky to get away with an initial $30k bill. That assumes no major surprises (likely) and no interior/cosmetic fixes. Definitely needs PPI to help identify major ie. $$$$ surprises.
I think it will be more like 40k to clean up interior stickies, fix leather, and mechanical refresh. Check for fuel smell in trunk and rear wheels too, fuel tank gaskets prone to leaking. Looks like engine was running smooth and strong in the video and I think the colors look great!
You can get to $20k ridiculously fast on real basic stuff. I don’t think $40 would be laughable…probably a touch conservative. Problem is no one is going to let a clean title 575 go for $60k in the current market…we have seen plenty of people with tons of money throwing it around and not giving a single solitary F. Dan and his score on BaT years back in the $60’s had to be the 575 floor? If it were my money I’d always buy the seller and hunt down a guy like @stevepaa as an example of a guy and car with long term ownership and all the kinks worked out. It would have to be a very special late year with all options car to take on the brain damage? I’d let someone with unlimited funds pay that tuition.
Agree 100% If it’s going to be the same total cost to get the equivalent of buying a premium well sorted/loved example, it’s an easy choice to get the one that requires less effort, has clear ownership/service history, and has the tools/books/window sticker
That's another sticky issue. The dealer is being very stubborn. He won't allow a proper PPI. He says it's fine if I want to bring my tech to see the car but he won't allow it off his lot. Red flag, amirite? How would any of you negotiate around that issue? I have a good tech who can glean a lot from a test drive and an on-site inspection but without getting the 575 on a lift and spending the time (and having the proper tools available, like a Leonardo) to do a full PPI, a lot can get missed. Has anyone structured a deal when an owner/dealer has not allowed the vehicle to leave the premises for a proper PPI? ketel
Make your price about 30% lower and really give it the Business on a test drive. See where things go. Otherwise have a number and be prepared to walk. Make sure the dealer has your contact info Like they say, "car for every a$$, @ss for every car" even these are no different
If he won't let a competent set of eyes really look at it, then there's something hiding -- or he's afraid there is. Also, it might not be worth his time to treat this car differently than any other on the lot. In either case, add an "ahhh-nuts!" margin and deduct that from your offer. Thinking outside the box, do you have a car dealer friend? This car has been around and around; maybe your friend can work out a trade for something more in the original dealer's wheelhouse? And if so, maybe that trade value + the profit margin is lower than the existing ask? All that said, I bought mine (328) with no PPI and no test drive and high miles because it was in the purchase budget. Sometimes you just gotta jump and see what happens.
I second that, walk away. This guy has had this car for sale for a long time (I have been watching it as well). No serious dealer would not allow a serious off sight PPI. Not most desirable color combo either… Nice video, thanks for making the time to do it and share with us.
I watched your video as well (thanks). I still say let someone else pay the tuition. Its really unfortunate a clean title low mile car like that has been so "ignored".
BIG red flag. Completely reasonable request, and completely UNreasonable to deny said request. My negotiation? “OK, keep your effin’ car.”
I see 3 distinct shades of silver on that car in a crappy video. I can just imagine how it looks in person. You are working real hard to talk yourself into buying a toilet despite many saying no. I reserve the right to say "I told you so".
having bought two wait for a clean car. bid low. these are $85-110k car, imho unless it has some crazy options or super low miles guy here in ATL bought a really nice car off of BAT in the $80's as i recall
So what eventually does or should become of cars in this situation? Assuming no bondo, The sum of the parts is still worth $40-50k. Seems like a perfect candidate for GTO engineering to turn into a 250 restomod or a Youtubers wet dream (DDE/GasMonkey... whatever you think of them) Or does it just eventually get passed onto a completely unsuspecting buyer, perhaps they have a restoration background or simply learn an expensive lesson? If they drop the price to $60k it'll sell in 5 minutes to someone all day long. Whats the Ven diagram overlap from "way too much to take a chance" vs "Hell yeah, what deal to take a chance" Not all of these are or should be pristine pedigree cars.
DDE and how they destroyed a nice low mile 550 was unacceptable. They should have started with something like this. I cannot house another car right now but this definitley smells like #racecar Remove/sell the Daytonas, remove the entire interior and go full racecar with a few beautiful whispers from Fabio and Trev and leave the F1 and that’s as much fun as you can have with your clothes on if you can buy it for $60k.
Can I ask the group a dumb question….. On a car with no docs (I didn’t look or pull a carfax)….with the digital odometer on the 575 is it easy to electronically roll it back? is there any possibility this actually isn’t “low miles”?
All odometers are easily changed to whatever you want. Your own state requires any repair shop to change any new odometer to reflect best known actual mileage when installed. There is no such thing as an odometer that cannot say anything you want it to say.
