They might have been too aggressive with cleaner/degreaser in the engine bay - I don't usually see cars as new as 2004 showing that kind of valve cover wear, it's more normal on the older 99-00 stuff, and even then, i wouldn't say it was a chronic problem. Perhaps they pressure washed it, which could also explain it.

    Yup, what he said.

I have a '01 which I've driven over 37k miles since new. It's serviced, cleaned, and detailed regularly and have not seen that type of wear at all.

I'd say someone's not careful working around the engine. Makes you wonder what else is messed up in the car.

But you wouldn't say it was a sign of engine abuse (overheating, etc.)?

Is it just high water pressure that would cause this? Not heat/other abuse?

It's probably over-aggressive cleaning, like what the others said. The scuffing looks like it might have been done with a stiff-bristled brush or worse, a wire brush. If this happened after you took your car to the detailer, I'd check around the car for anything else that might have been damaged.

First picture: The area in the second "r" in "Ferrari" looked like it might have been done with a screwdriver. :(

I do not think overheating would cause that. I'd say cleaning the engine bay with the wrong type of cleaner/brush.
