Is this sealant supposed to be there?

    I'm currently getting my '85 308 repainted, and the bodyshop guy asked me today if the black line of sealant where the pillar meets the body (as shown by the arrow in the attached photo) was supposed to be there or not. I realized I didn't actually know, as I hadn't paid it too much attention when looking at other people's cars, and now I can't find any pictures that show that section close enough to tell.

    So... is that supposed to be black, or should it be red, or should it not even have any sealant there?

    i've got sealant there on mine. i just painted over it.

    Yes, it's part of the car. It's supposed to be black.

    I'm worried that your body man has never done a Ferrari 308 before.

    I wonder if he knows how much your window seals cost before he ruins them.

    Just curious, but why is your targa roof just laying on the back of the
    car gathering dust? Why not just put it away to keep it clean....? Same
    for the engine bay. Maybe you should ask him to COVER it, using something
    other than the roof.

    Ok, ok, this isn't the bash my body shop guy thread. lol. The engine bay wasn't wide open like that when I got there. He had it all covered, and I'd moved things around to take pictures. I'll give you that the targa top got dust on it. He has done work on 308's before, though I'm not sure he's done a complete respray. Anyway, I trust him, and after three weeks of body work, I'm pleased with the results so far (that picture was taken two weeks ago).

    Thanks for the answers on the seal lines.

    First of all, thanks to this thread, this is the first time in my 2 years of ownership that I concentrated on the black silicone area, too.

    No doubt you are satisfied with your painter, but just FYI...rustproofing needs to be re-treated. To prevent corrosion, scroll down to "Maintenance" to see Ferrari's Tuff-Kote/Dinol re-treatment recommendations after bodywork and re-spray...

    Those sealant lines gives you some ideas where the car was painted as it's often missed or repainted during a re-spray. I don't know how people get away with not redoing that part correctly since it's a dead give-away for re-paint.

    Some people/shops are more particular than others....

    This is interesting. Apparently, the guy who repainted my car had never done a 308 before because the sealant line was painted over. Anyone have a pic of what this area is SUPPOSED to look like?

    So do I.
    The shop is about a mile from my house. I've seen some street rods & award winning customized show cars that he's built. It's NOT a body shop. It's a custom car shop that does body work as fill-in.

    They've done 308 & also work on several other cars for me. It's where I take cars when something prevents me from doing the work myself.

    I took a look at jdubois car last Monday. Dan knows what he's doing & it looks good.

    If you spray over the black seal it is likely to bubble up over time.

    I've seen it on other cars.
