I was looking at Motorsport.com and took a look at the BAR top speed photos. Then I thought about all of the talk over the years about removing wings from the cars and thought: "So this is what it would look like." I must admit it doesn't look as bad as I'd thought. I could live with out the rudder but I must not too bad!

    What are your thoughts?

If that is the new design than I don't understand the areodynamics purpose without and kind of downforce aid. Looks like they were testing chasis only IMO.

This is the car they used to break the 400kph record, not their new car for next year.

What I was referring to is that many people bemoan the lack of overtaking in F1 due to a car following another not having clean airflow and hence lack of down-force. This means the car behind another isn't able to stay close through the turns and make good run on the next straight.

The argument goes: Eliminate the wings on F1 cars and rely on mechanical grip as they did prior to the late 1960s.

The car above does have some downforce. The front wing at a very narrow angle of attack does produce downforce, and the rear still has it's diffuser (What's a diffuser? Click here) which is also creating some downforce.

But, any car following this one would be in a relatively clean airflow. This would allow it to get closer and would increase the possibility of overtaking.

That's what I was reffering to.

Good grief it looks ahem castrated.

I have no issues with the new (2007 proposal) split rear wings, but this BAR car wouldn't do it for me.

My brain says "get rid of all the aeros", but my heart can't follow. <sigh>

Or bring back the old Avus circuit from the dead :)

Seriously, the car looks odd in my opinion and will be severely unbalanced with front wings and no rear wings. If we want a wingless F1 car why not watch historic GP racing and get the rest of the package as well - skinny tires, lots of danger, etc.

Wings is the way to go. The CDG wing looks ugly but promises to improve racing. I would be in favor of such a wing over no wings.

Also the technical side in me likes to believe that the F1 car is the fastest thing on a circuit out there in cardom. First the car gets temporarily muzzled with a 2.4 liter engine and with a wing such as this it is akin to neutering the beast. Not kosher in my book! :)

Just my $.02, but I kind of like it. I think it would look even better if they got rid of the vertical tail. I'm not sure if I like it because I relate it to more passing or for pure aesthetics, but it's nice and clean nonetheless.

Long live Carel Godin de Beaufort who went over the top of the banked turn with his Porsche, landed on his wheels, drove back onto the track to continue the race until the marshalls black-flagged him for driving around with a car that was too seriously damaged to be safe...

Or... back to Le Mans with the Les Hunaudieres straight WITHOUT Playstation chicanes...

    >>>The record for top speed in a closed circuit used to be hold by a WM at Le Mans (when Les Hunaudieres was still a 5 km long straight). at about 405-407 Km/h (sources differ on the exact speed).<<<

That was during the race... NOT a record attempt...

I don't understand why profile completion is necessary? Did Rob Lay institute a new rule that to access the boards you must fill out your profile?

It just helps some of us with constructing answers or even responding at all. As you'll find there are some people on here that have no real experience with racing. Either as a fan (they're new fans) or working within the motorsport industry. Someone who's filled out their profile will get a great deal more respect and time invested in my responses than someone who hasn't. It also will allow me to be more general or more detailed if I know the level of experience of the individual I'm responding to. Granted we'll get to know you and your intelligence, wisdom over time as you post but filling in your profile helps speed up the process.

We are indeed. Although that one has run its course a bit now anyway.

While in the Army I probably outranked you, but then again you do have the bigger vehicle, so I won't talk back...
