My recently bought 328 Euro (Swiss) model had a previously installed upgraded radio/CD player. This was no longer in the car when I bought it but I know that an upgrade was made since the wiring harness to connect it to is still wired up in the car. Needless to say that the original Blaupunkt radio does not work since it doesn't match the wiring harness.

I have bought an Alpine DVD player that I will install. Since I am doing all this work, it was suggested that I should change the speakers at the same time. A good idea.
However, given that the previous owner already upgraded the stereo system, I am wondering if he also upgraded the speakers.

Since it seems that I have to take the door panel off to change the speakers, which is a bit of a pain in the ars, I would like to avoid this if possible.
I have taken a picture of the current speaker by removing only 2 screws from the door panel and prying the panel gently open.

If these are the original speakers then it might be worthwhile to upgrade them but I can't tell. Are these original or upgrades?
    Any ideas?

    Thanks

It looks like a paper element.

If it is you can do MUCH better. I would replace it anyway since it is cheap and easy to get a good quality modern speaker these days

If I do replace them, any idea on the thickness of the speakers? I read somewhere on this forum that they have to be 2 1/2"" thick, is this true?
I know that the diameter is 6".

Is it really that hard to remove the door panel? I may need to replace my speakers soon, also.

As far as removing the door panel, I have seen this somewhere on this forum and don't take credit for it:

"The 328 door panels are pretty much like the 308 door panels. About the same amount of work to remove as pulling a head unit.

1)Remove the door lock knob by unscrewing it.

    2) Remove the arm rests
The arm rests are held on by 3 10mm nuts: 1 in front of the latch release, 1 shortly behind it, & 1 towards the rear of the opening for the latch. Then there are 2 #2 phillips head screws on the bottom of the arm rest. 1 about half-way between the latch release opening & the bottom tip of the rest, and 1 at the very tip.

    3) Remove the trim screws
There are 4 or 5 #1 phillips trim screws: 1 on the cover's edge just above the latch. The others are buried in the carpet in the bottom of the door & colored to match it. All are just inboard of the leather trim that runs around the outside edge of the carpet. Their locations are: About the middle of the door's outside corner. About 1/2 or 2/3 of the way from the outside corner to the speaker. About an inch towards the center of the door from the speake opening's inner edge. Front edge of the door about level with the center of the speaker opening. The panel should be loose al along the bottom & just hanging by the trim along the window. If it isn't, go find the trim screw that's still buried in the carpet.

Like a lot of other things on these cars, the exact number & location of the trim screws seems to vary a bit.

5)Remove the panel by lifting it upwards & slightly rotating the outside edge upwards along the door.

    That's it!

Be careful when removing the armrest. Do NOT let it pivot out of position as the cover is stapled on & the staples can scratch up the door panel then it's a couple of days with crack filler & leatherique to get rid of them (don't ask). Also make sure you completely remove the screws before removing the armrest as they too could make a heck of a scratch."

    Hope it helps.

It looks OEM, I see no aftermarket 'fitment' rings to mount the speaker to, so that tells me the holes around the speaker correctly 'line-up' with the existing holes in the door mount. Any new aftermarket Japanese speaker will not just 'drop-in' a 25-year-old Italian car door and experience zero fittment issues....let us know the speaker brand sticker on the cone when you pull it. I had Panasonics in my doors.

Removing and replacing door panels on my 308 were so simple it was almost ridiculous! Can't say about the speakers, mine were replaced by the PO. I can take the door panels off, clean 'em up and put 'em back on in less than half an hour with about 2 hand tools! I LOVE that about the 308s!! Well, not only the door panels, but so many other things are so easy to disassemble and re-assemble...YAY!!

    Thanks for the tips.

M.James - you make perfect sense. Will let you know who made the speakers.
Dino246gt - thanks for the encouragement, I suspect the 328 door is very similar to the 304 for panel removal.

    Yes,
thank you for the detail. It is much appreciated knowing something is an easy job before starting rather than getting hung up just when you have to go to dinner with the wife, etc........

By the way, I just pulled my speaker out on my US '89 328 and it is the original speaker. It looks identical to the one in the photo and has a Ferrari sticker with part number on the back.

What is the depth of the speaker that could fit in there?
    Would a 6.5" speaker fit?

I've brought my speaker into work today to take a local stereo shop. The speaker diameter is 6.25 inches. I think a 6.5 might just fit depending on the mounting hardware of the new speaker. The mounting is inset in the door skin so some spacers between the speaker and mounting holes could allow for possible fit issues. The depth of the original speaker is 2 3/16, but I think a little deeper speaker will fit, say 2.5 maybe even a little more.
