I mentioned it elsewhere, but how is a driver like Ide allowed on grand prix track in a Formula 1 car? At one point during the Aussie race, Bob Varsha almost apologetically commented on how hard it must be to step up to F1 machinery from the Japanese Super GT series. Wait a friggin second. Kimi Raikkonen came from Formula Renault and adjusted pretty easily. I looked at Ide's bio and he ran 3 seasons of F3 (slightly quicker than FR) and 3 seasons of Formula Nippon run concurrently with the Japanese Super GT. A Formula 1 race is NOT the place for a racing driver to gain experience--he's got to have a level of competency when he arrives. Ito was dead last of the cars still running, a whopping 3 laps behind. But I guess when you're qualifying almost 10 seconds behind pole, losing only 3 laps in the race is a success. And no excuses about the car, because he's almost 5 seconds/lap slower than Sato, who has proven to be nothing more than an average driver.

Gee, maybe I should start a petition...:)

Then there are the drivers who spin on the parade lap, or behind the safety car, or crash behind the safety car.

Hmm: That would encompass most of the drivers in the field.

My instructor always said, "There are two kinds of pilots: Those who have landed with the gear up, and those who are going to." Or, as they put it in Thermodynamics: Sh*t Happens.

Look how long DeCrasheris was in F1.

The complaint about Ide is the same complaint I have about LeMans type racing: It's dangerous to have cars that much slower running around the same racetrack at the same time.

There's one real reason Ide is in F1.

So Sato doesn't look so bad. ;)

You seem to be operating under the assumption that the only way you get into F1 is to be the best (but I know by your previous posts you know that isn't true).

Politics and money are big factors, there are many, maybe hundreds of drivers better than Ide. If I drove like he did, I think I would be too embarrassed to accept an F1 ride.

If, of course, you remembered to fill in your tips! :D
Wish they'd hurry up and post the results....

I've seen some no-hope drivers at the back of teh field in F1, but I really am struggling to rem one as bad as Ide. Anybody?

I know none of this should really surprise me. But I guess after 3 races it seems strange that nobody has said anything about him. Barrichello could have easily lashed out over Ide ruining his qualifying lap. He's had close calls being lapped in every race. Every time the leaders come up behind him the announcers joke about "Uh-oh, it's Ide. Better look out!" I suppose if none of the other teams or drivers care then I probably shouldn't. It's not my a$$ or money on the line.

On the same note, I'm also surprised at how difficult it has been for Japan to produce a top-caliber F1 driver. Motor sports are so big in Japan, and there is so much racing in various forms, as well as heavy participation by I think all of its manufacturers that one would expect better drivers to emerge. Especially with the huge support the companies put behind them.

In the early going, it was to remind everybody to "Beware the Ides of March."

Now that March is over, I don't know what he's there for other than dead last f-1 tipping bonus points, for which I'm using Ide from here on out.

What happened to the F1 rule that all the cars in the field must be within X percentage of the pole car, speed or time-wise ?

Yeah, you would think a country like Japan, with it's industrials such as Honda, Nissan, Bridgestone, etc. surely would have a 'house' driver that would love a shot at qualifying a car, or at least have a handful of drivers show up for a testing session to see who is the best, and go from there. I guess they need to learn from Jack Roush, or Gurney, or a Tullius-type of organization.

The "107% rule" got dropped with single lap qualifying. With the new WWF knock-down system, not only is the 107% rule not there, but often the 11th and 12th place drivers had quicker lap times (in session 2) than the 9th and 10th place drivers (in session 3 with race fuel). If you have enough rules, you effectively have none -- it's just a matter of which rules get enforced.

Just a guess, but I suspect that an issue with Japan is that it's considered rude to tell someone when they're acting like an arse. So they keep right on acting like an arse. Case in point: Bridgestone commercials. It's gotten pretty obvious that those commercials are made to appeal to the Bridgestone execs, rather than to the buying public.

Honda has a long history of attaching less than spectacular drivers to their engines. Back in the '80s, the story went that some visiting Honda execs were looking at the Honda engined Lotus. One commented on the business card sized mirrors and asked how anyone could see with them. A Lotus mechanic replied, "This is Nakajima's car -- there's never anyone behind him." ;)

Yoong was racy - he won the A1GP Sprint race that was aired on OLN yesterday - granted it was the last race of the season but nevertheless he did win.
