    Hi all,

I'm looking at a 2006 Carrera S with 67,000 miles. The CarFax is clean. Anything I should look for specifically? Do these have any major engine / transmissions that arise after a certain point? If well maintained how long will these run well for?

    Thanks in advance.

You can have the dealer pull the ecu data log during a PPI to see if the thing has been thrashed and redlined for excessive periods. Have that car PPI'd for sure.

PPI's cost about $120 for a normal one, if you want the full deal, a Pre-Owner Certified inspection will run you $350-$360.

I would try to get a Carrera S with the 3.8 liter engine, not sure if those came out in 2007 or 2008?

    What transmission does it have?

I bought a 997 similar to that with around 44K miles at the time (a couple of years ago) and we now have around 68K miles with now issues on the conventional 6-speed. Literally no service issues other than oil change/regular maintenance.

Really? My porsche technician swears that this was taken care of after the first few years of the 996...

RMS was a problem on early 997s, but largely fixed by '07; however, it can still crop up. everything I've heard is that you know you have an RMS problem within 30k miles, though.

also avoid any car that has excessive oil use; those cars usually go kablammo eventually.

if you are on the original clutch a new one might be in the cars near future.

They are great cars just do a complete PPI as mentioned and service history is
huge. If the car has been well cared and no serious past issues, go for it!

Does that go for older 996's as well (the 30K mile comment)? Knock on wood, but my 2000 996 hasn't dripped a drop and it's going on 60K. I must say though, it does take away some fun of driving the car with that hanging in the back of my mind all of the time.
