Nothing new here almost every team is using some form of supercomputers to calculate air flow around the car before they even build a wind tunnel model (CFD Models) and thermal and mecanical stresses (FEA Models). The fact the Ferrari is using AMD processors is nothing to be suprised about either even though they are sponsored by AMD. Cray supercompters are all mostly operated using AMD Dual Core Opteron processors. Simply put to test out these math intensive models quickly and efficently requires a lot of processing power. For example a simple CFD model os a wing airfoil section takes about 6-10 hours to compute 0.025 seconds of airflow around it in 2 dimensions, on my AMD 64 3200+ 2GB ram computers at home. so you can see how much it take to simulate an entire car in 3 dimensions.
