In truth, your inner child doesn't seem that much younger than the outer child.

Making work for mods makes them peevish.

Consider the fact that the work isn't made by the users, but by the rules laid down by the administrator(s).

I know we've talked about this before, and now I'm seeing other mods playing "mommy" and cleaning up my posts. WTH kind of site are you guys aiming to create here? I can tell you it'll be a site full of grumpy mods if rules like this continue to pile up.

I understand you don't want profanity to show up in threads and you've set up a filter to accomplish such a thing, but I don't see the harm in allowing users to self-filter. I'm not actively trying to circumvent the filter... that can be done quite easily with Unicode characters (i.e. ų instead of u or ƈ instead of c).

As I've explained in the past, it's easier for a user to establish a consistent behavior across forums than to require him to remember a censoring policy for each forum. And two of the forums I frequent don't have any nannies so I must self-censor.

The irony here is that the filterless forums have a large underage population, and here I'm getting my balls busted at a forum that's mostly populated by adults. Seriously? Why is this such a big deal?

All I'm saying is that mods can't blame users for "making them peevish" when the rule system they're trying to enforce is incredibly pedantic.

Whether you deem the rule as pedantic or not, it is a rule that we are all (moderators too) required to follow.

As we have explained in the past, we don't care what other forums do as we are independent of them. We have a very easy-to-follow requirement for all members regarding profanity here: just type out what you were going to say (in full) and let the automatic filter do its work. If you are unsure how a post will look after you have typed it, then make use of the preview button before you submit it. If you wish to add additional filtering at this point, go ahead, but don't bypass any of the automatic filtering or a moderator will have to step in.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

There is another method that is consistent with all forum policies. Don't use any words that require self-censoring or trigger Fchat's profanity filter. I know that's a really alien concept, but what the heck, it might be worth a try. ;)

And herein lies the rub. What is your definition of bypass? To me, it would be the act of getting certain language to appear on-screen despite the filter. Which doesn't happen when I tastefully self-censor.

The meaning of whatever it is I'm trying to convey is lost on many when the filter knocks out the entire word. When only a few letters are knocked out, however, there is not as much need to guess, and the message is transmitted more or less in full.

The censorship imposed by this filter is too heavy handed. You might as well throw out the entire sentence while you're at it...

Well if we're going to toss out ridiculous suggestions, how about I swear in Klingon from now on?

    So, censoring myself is childish?

Or is it the fact that I'm speaking up about a short-sighted rule?

These seem to be adult behaviors to me. A mod bullying me for speaking up, however, that's childish.

    1) We don't want certain words posted because not only do we allow kids, women, etc to post, but keep in mind 75% of our activity is people browsing from work. Not only are people at work concerned with what shows up on their screen with people looking over their should, but they are concerned with what work firewalls are scanning and flagging going into their computer.

    2) Since we're concerned with the words blatantly displayed we have the censor filter and don't want it bypassed because then the censor system doesn't do its job and the words are still blatantly displayed, which we're trying to avoid.

    3) We don't want to clamp down to the point where you aren't even allowed to post words that will be censored ****. By allowing people to post those words and the censor system to do its job then user still has some personal freedom to expression, most can figure out what word was intended, and all the while we've avoided words blatantly displayed and snagged by firewalls which is the goal.

    4) Those are the rules, live by them, leave, or break them and face the consequences.

We're not doing this to create more work for us or be oppressive, we actually have this policy to be balanced for entire community of allowing some expression, work friendly, and less work for mods.

Precisely. Is it really necessary to drop f-bombs or other profanity to express yourself? Seriously?!? It's really quite amazing how the perceived intelligence of the writer (or speaker) diminishes with every "busy" word uttered...

Bingo. I may be a newbie here but am a moderator on other automotive forums. People have a difficult time understanding that forum members are required to follow the rules that the mods and admins of that forum have laid out, regardless of how oppressive or stifling they may seem. It is not a "free speech" zone.

I'm somewhat surprised this conversation has been allowed to continue for as long as it has. I would have locked it a while ago. Goes to show you the mods and admins are a relatively patient bunch. Don't take that for granted...

I think I went through a typical language usage process: testing profanity as a teen, getting used to using profanity in everyday language in college, and so on. Even then, you certainly learn there is a time and place for it - such as profanity is OK with friends, but not with professors or at work. Then I had kids and my wife convinced me not to use it, so I eliminated it from my everyday conversation. What I realized after a few years listening to others was that profligate profanity loses its purpose, which is to underscore your strongest feelings. My friends and family know if I ever use profanity, which is maybe a couple of times a year, I REALLY mean it. With others that use it commonly, it's meaningless. Such common usage actually negates the meaning of profanity; the user might as well use "darn" as ****, it has the same semantic value.

Is there a middle of the road on this issue? Can we at least see the first and/or last letter of the word we're not supposed to utter in front of the Pope? I'm still incredulous that language presents such a problem to so many people...

How can an artist paint a masterpiece if he's not allowed to use every color in the spectrum?

Judge one's intelligence on his ability to think, not on the colors with which he paints.

I'd say my "bombs" occur in one of every few hundred posts. I'd never make it in the Navy.

not sure if the software can keep the first letter, that would be a consideration. Leaving it to the user won't happen.

You realize of course that typing "f-bombs" in the text of your post that you committed the very sin against the TOU that Maestro8 was talking about.

You are guilty of self-censoring the word **** rather than just typing it in.

To follow Rob, Yin, and Wax's instructions precisely, you should have changed your sentence to:

"Is it really necessary to drop **** words or other profanity to express yourself?"

    Ironic, isn't it?

Don't behave like an ******* who doesn't understand the ****ing concept and you'll get along just fine.

Take a **** in the Fchat pool, and one of the moderators will toss you out on your ass.

See? Not every damn thing you type will get the ****ing fchat moderators on you, just the stuff that would make you white haired old grandma blush. :D
