a buzzy high pitched whine when I engaged the clutch in sixth, went silent if I depressed the clutch an inch. 100 miles later, a shriek with the clutch fully depressed. Throw-out bearing, I assume. Got a tow to place I've only seen in passing, so I'm in the hands of strangers, good reputation but expensive--no estimate yet. I'm going to do the clutch, obviously, while it's apart. Estimates? Advice?

If you have been giving any thought to exhaust modifications now is the time. To get the clutch out they will be removing pretty much all of it.

I started with a whine too but thankfully no one replaced me. LOL. Good luck mate. Thought I'd throw in some dry humor for you.

Thanks, Terry. I went with the Hill Engineering bearing, which is less than OEM and, as you said, has the seals fitted--not so easy, I was told. I got a fair labor estimate from the shop where the car was taken--very fair considering they had me over a barrel. Parts seemed high, and when I called Ricambi they priced the clutch for me as well--pretty substantial savings, although I'm not sure how nice it is to deprive the shop of their parts mark-up. I guess we're all scrambling to save at this point. Anyway, it's all been shipped. I know it's been said before, but I'll say it again: thanks to Daniel at Ricambi; he put everything together in no time and managed to get it shipped overnight. I hope by the end of the week to have the car back. Maybe with a new clutch I'll be able to tuck into second more gracefully.

John- No doubt about Daniel being a Godsend. Hope you get your car back on the road soon. Mine (575M) is currently ripped apart for interior work and I am having withdrawal symptoms.

    Terry,

Going through the same thing here! Getting the major done, and putting in a new clutch. Anything I should have added in terms of mods while she's getting fixed up?

Wade- Like Brian said, you have to remove nearly the entire exhaust to get at the clutch, so if you have a 2002 or 2003 575M with stock center muffler section, you might want to think about fitting straight pipes like those on the later 2004 and 2005 575Ms. Any competent muffler shop can weld up a set in stainless and the sound with a stock exhaust will be much better. Not very expensive, either.

Also, there was a clutch position sensor fitted later in life with more water-proof connections. I would probalby have that fitted as well if I were changing my clutch. Brian may be able to better explain whether he feels that is necessary or not. Here is the Technical Bulletin on the sensor, which came out in 2005 or so. Assuming, of course, you have an F1 shifter.

Thanks Terry!!! The car I bought had tubis installed, so I'm not sure if I need the straight pipes. As for the clutch sensors, I get it checked out in the morning. I'm going through withdrawal myself. :(

Wade- You are probably correct with the Tubis. The 550 owners with early (550) Tubis and straight or X-pipes have said that makes for a pretty loud combination. The later (575M) Tubis, I have not heard anything on them yet, but most of the aftermarket rear 575M systems were designed when the center mufflers were still standard from the factory.
