My "new" Countach will be delivered tomorrow afternoon from Iain Tyrrells. I had previously agreed to wait another 2 weeks so that it could be displayed at the NEC classic car show but couldn't take waiting any longer! I think I have watched just about every you tube footage related to the Countach and I have magazines and books related to it. I'm used to driving all kinds of cars regularly such as my Lamborghini Huracan, '89 testarossa, Lancia delta integrale evo etc. However I was wondering if any owners had any tips on running and driving that may not have been documented. The weather should be OK for driving this week after some terrible weather here in the UK so I'm looking forward to getting some km's done in it. Although its been looked at by Iain Tyrrells workshop .. it has been failrly inactive for the past 5 years.

  2. On a carbed car, there is no choke. Pump the pedal a few times (before turning the key) when starting cold. Engage the starter as you push the pedal down. When hot just turn the key & push the pedal down. Do not pump the pedal before starting when hot.

Consider a battery disconnect, especially heading into winter. Don't hammer on the car (or any car) until the oil warms up.

Few quirks here & there. Have fun & post a few pics!

To avoid clutch wear, don't ride the clutch. I always drive it like a truck foot fully off the clutch and then press the loud pedal as hard as you like. As already mentioned, get the oil showing temp before you start to use in anger. When cold, you can use the Ferrari trick of going from 1st to 3rd gear if the 2nd is a bit sticky.

I leave my battery connected, but have a Ctek charger in place, so always ready to go at a moments notice.

Ignore the Owners manual Tyre pressures, you'll bounce all over the road. I use 33PSI front and 36PSI rear. Happy with.

I'm sure others will chime in. But how exciting. Will you be able to sleep this evening. Lots of pictures please!

    Great advise thank you.

What oil do you top up with and how regularly do you have to in your experience.

Use double clutching like when downshifting, after about 50 times this will not be a problem anymore.

Same here in Texas - I have a lot more trouble with my Ferrari 328 than the Countach. The Countach is slightly more resistant to go into 2nd than any other gear when cold, but the 328 I would really have to force it into second if I were to try - I either crawl in 1st or go for 3rd.

Wonderful. Take some pictures, we don't care if its dark ! :D

Nice to see the Italian V12 sticker bottom right of the windscreen, I'm sure is a Carrera Sport sticker. The car is looking great and so is that baby blue Miura in the background.

2.5 hours ish, get plenty of video footage as she comes off the trailer!

How do you open the front boot? There is a button to the right of the steering wheel but that doesn't seem to do anything even with the key turned.

    Bravo!

There's a latch under and to the side of the steering column, reach under here and feel for it and pull.

Congrats, she looks at home already. Yes, full tank of gas would have added around £1500 to the bill :D

Update us today please, if you get the chance to fuel her and drive her a bit!

Thank you and managed to open the front bonnet/ boot.

Had a great time this morning driving it. Its going to take me a while to get used to the foot inputs for the clutch and accelerator but getting there. I put 75 litres in it but the fuel gauge is only reading 1/3 full. It also clicked off as if it was full. I wonder if it is full but the fuel gauge isn't working properly. Interestingly when I accelerate the gauge moves upward?! It was a great drive and love the noise it makes and its quick. Everything just fit me like a glove. Its tucked away in my garage again as rain is coming. Hopefully tomorrow I can take some time off to drive it as the weather looks good. The gearbox does make a loud mechanical whining noise under load, particularly noticeable at speed. I'm hoping that this is normal.

It will get better the more you fuel it up to the max. It's the mechnism in the tank, if the prior owners didn't fuel up to the max it gets stuck.
Same experience with the Mimran QV when I bought her in 2001.
Also the gauges moving is normal, fuel goes from left to right and forth/back, means also the swimmer of the fuel sending unit will move. The more it moves the better it moves freely -> will be more accurate at standstill.

Also it's a long lasting procedure to fill up completely, since the fuel needs to flow into the other tank and the air escape from there, to really fill it up to the max it takes about 5 minutes with a enorm number of attempts. When driving/cornering hard with full tank - fuel might get lost through the evaporation loop (left side at the firewall - drains in front of the left fuel tank)).

I've only got one set of keys for it. Can anyone recommend where to get a new key from. Sadly its missing a tool roll and owners manual etc. I suspect these will be difficult to get and expensive.

In Switzerland we have Mister Minit, a company which is specialized in repairing shoes and copying keys.
The keys can simply be copied, the regular Fiat blanks can be used.

you're facing exactly the same issues I did 20 years ago...
