I worked as a GP for 5 yrs in the lowest socio-economic area in Australia. You would believe the stuff I've seen.

Now I'm angry... I think I'll take it out on my next patient.

I'm sure we would believe it...how about a license to have kids - post a $100k bond and an 18 year business plan! As the child of a deadbeat dad I'm also one of the 'got out soon as I could' crowd.

It will be interesting to see if some of you are hypocritical due to him being a member of PHONP,yet espousing the 'crookness' of the system that pays these 'professional' unmarried/single mother families/situations.

I know there are at least 3 of you here that wouldn't pi** on PH if she were on fire,yet will be antagonistic to the situation Fdoc has started to put out there.

Most single mums aren't lazy, nor is their prime motivation to rort the system. Very few make a "lifestyle choice", the vast majority are from failed marriages. The stereotypical single teenage mum is a different matter. Often from very dysfunctional families, the first exposure to anything approaching normality is their boyfriend's family. A girl falling pregnant in that situation thinks their life will be all happy families from then on. This is ignorance, not a devious plan to get child support. I still think that (a) these girls should have a lot of life and parenting training, and (b) the fathers should be held a lot more accountable.

I could go on about this, but that's basics.

Re your remarks on the single mum thing..........disagree....AND....not up here.

A large majority are'professional' unmarried mums here....they maybe living with a bloke,but they're still taking single mum 'entitlements'

I have just put in a family(this is more of what you said in your original statement)into the house I bought in Northern NSW,they,according to the real estate,are receiving $1800 per fortnight,they have 4 children and 3 dogs......I wish I could afford to live with that sort of disposable income.

Yes, once entrenched, the entitlement mind set pervades. It's far too easy for them, but, they don't SET OUT to do it as teenagers. I've seen single mums with two medicare cards to hold all the names - each with a different surname. I don't think they should get more than 5% of their benefit as cash. Do that, and watch tobacco, alcohol, coca cola, and poker machine revenue plummet. I think this should apply to all social security payments.

You have to understand many upon many have been brought into this world by welfare dependent parents....they know no other world and they have been taught how to milk the system.
Certainly in country Aussie,it maybe different down there..I doubt it though.

Didn't one of the state governments float the idea of a card/vouchers ..NOT cash for some of 'these' folk to acquire their daily/monthly etc,requirements rather than the cash handout?
This purchases were going to be policed by not allowing various items to be acquired on that system.
It got shot down in flames,as I recall.

yes to this as well. when I was in primary school, all my books etc were given to me direct by the school. In high school, the system was changed and Mum got a cash allowance for school supplies... guess who never had their textbooks? yes, it was embarrassing a
having to ask the teachers for stuff in primary school, but better than the alternative.

ARRESTS for drunkenness have halved and pokies revenue has dropped by 15 per cent during the Ceduna trial of the Federal Government’s cashless welfare card.

The number of people using homelessness services has declined by 42 per cent in the three months since trial began in March.


Ceduna Mayor Allan Suter said the trial was “the best thing that we’ve ever had” despite the mixed resultsTrial participants receive only 20 per cent of their welfare payment in cash, which they can continue to spend however they like.

The other 80 per cent goes into a mainstream debit card account that cannot be used to purchase alcohol and gambling products, or withdrawn as cash.

 

Thanks Peter901. I was just about to post that I think Ceduna (and possibly a few other outback communities) have been using this cashless card thing for a while and it has been quite successful.
