Today was just a great day all around. I sealed the deal on 49473 (Michael's old car). This car is even more fabulous in person than in the (oodles) of pictures we've all seen. I believe it drives drives as strong and tracks as straight as it did in 1984 - plus, every little switch, light, and lever work just as they should. And almost all of the finish plus 100% of the interior is the stuff it left Maranello with. Virtually every acessory is still with the car - down to the little baggie for the window crank. After seeing and driving half a dozen BB's over the past 2 years, it's easy to see that a car like this is worth every penny. I know I'm going to hear that this is a biased opinion, but, after seeing how phenomenal a Platinum BB is after several average-to-better-than-ok cars, I'm saying it first: a great Boxer will be a quarter mil by the end of the decade. Don't believe me - just check this thread in the archive in 3 years. And be ready to write an even bigger check if you're still looking.

Also, buying a car at Steve Barney's shop in NC is something every enthusiast should experience. To echo an earlier thread, you don't have to see one of Steve's cars to verify the description he's giving you - the car was spot-on as described and prepped as promised. But you should want to visit his dealership to enjoy the hospitality, talk Ferraris in person with an enthusiast of his caliber, and realize how a real first-rate, world class brokerage should operate. My dad and I just had our expectations vastly exceeded.

Joining the family feels great. I am absolutely thrilled. The car will be in Fla by the end of the week, and it'll be at Cavallino in January.

    Forza,
    David

(PS -there was another nice red/tan BB in the shop... Steve's son-in-law's... not officially for sale, but you can always call Steve and make an offer...)

What a beautiful, beautiful car my friend! Enjoy the heck out of it before the price appreciation comes making it too expensive to drive regularly and making us owners too afraid to drive them!

    Very sharp. Congrats again.

My 328 came from Sport Auto as well and has been a trouble-free bundle of joy. A platinum car, but I drive it.

I think Jesse's right, the Boxers and ultimately all the '80s cars are going to be museum pieces someday. Hopefully not before we've had more time to enjoy them.

I'm with ya, Bullfighter. By the way, 328s rock! I loved mine when I had it and pretty much trouble free, like you said.

Absolutely gorgeous car. If I had the means for that kind of Ferrari I would have been gunning for it myself! Congratulations.

I agree with Bullfighter. I'd be hard pressed to decline a perfect pair as a 328 and Boxer. They apopear, to me at least, so authentic to different qualities of the ferrari cars. The 430 I was in recently while incredibly impressive, in a sense was so modern, that I could not help feeling the engine noise, everything, was well a tad contrived by comparison. So for prices of BB's where they are now it's fraction of a decent 275 GTB 4, and the looks, maybe not quite as good IMHO as a 328, but with a 12....

enjoy driving it instead of flying when you travel, that is what those GT's are meant for...

    best,

Congrats on your new purchase. I agree with you that in a little while from now Boxers will be a quarter mil. I have heard this from many people. I think it's always best to buy the best you car you can for the money. I have some friends that have purchased cheaper cars and by the time they were done with paintwork, interior, mechanical, finding all the tools, books, etc.. it cost more than a perfect original car. It is very cool to get that time capsule experience. The smell the tight feeling of everything etc.. Enjoy!!!

Thanks for the emails, everyone. The car is going to be in St. Petersburg, Florida. Interestingly, after the car was imported by Lyons, its original mid-1980's owner was a fellow who lived in Tampa - so I like to think that the car is happy to be coming home.

The time capsule experience really is great, especially since this car has finally been "broken in," and sorted by Michael and Woody in the last 3 years. It's really the best of all worlds. I looked at a few cars I would've had to do paint/interior/big services done, and they were all at least $85K-100K in this year's market, and more recently, some good drivers (which would've needed work to be right for me) were $115-130K.

I agree that it pays to buy the best you can afford, and getting a car that is "done" is a sure thing.

    Forza,
    David

    Hi David,
I too congratulate you on your decision to purchase the Boxer. It truly is a magnificent car with great credentials and soon to have more. I bought the car with investment in mind. I paid a premium for the low miles and condition, so basically all I did was spend many hours detailing and admiring the car for months while only driving it about a hundred miles. I was invited to attend an event Steve Barney was having at VIR offering demo drives of Lamborghini Gallardos. After one lap with his car it was clear to me that, that was incredibly more fun than looking at the Boxer sitting in my garage. I know now that for me, Real Estate is for investing, cars are for driving! The Gallardo I drove on the track is now in my garage. A 2006, Titanium with E-Gear. Sweet!
Have a great time with your new ride and much luck on your Concours competition. It will be fun to watch your progress of the car and I agree with you, this car is destined to be the most beautiful low miled, most award winning Ferrari BB512i in existence and worth a great deal more than you paid. My friend Peter Krause told me "Your never pay to much for a wonderful Ferrari, you may have to wait a little longer to get you price".
I know Michael Barber worked hard to win all the awards this car recieved, but I am hoping he will be generous and send them to so they can be with the car and a part of its history and provenance.
    Sincerely,
    Woody Byrd

The car arrived in FL on Friday, and I made arrangements to visit over the weekend and enjoy it immediately. This car is just strikingly perfect - it runs/drives/smells like a new 512. The redline symphony is just amazing.

49473 performed flawlessly on my familiar roads and interstates, and, guys, it is just an absolute joy to own and drive a BB. I've got to give thanks to all my car's previous owners for maintaining this car to such a high degree - I appreciate all your work, and it's a honor to have the Boxer. What a magical car. Amazing that essentailly every part of of every Boxer was made by hand - every one of our cars is a real craftsman's masterpiece.

    Forza,
    David

I traded 91065 to Steve Barney towards the BB. The car is now in his shop in NC. I had a few offers on the 348, but the deals were about where I would be with the trade value + tax savings. My old car was very clean, but it needed some cosmetic work, and it would've been a hard independent sell. Steve's going to have a gem well-doc'd 348 once he cleans her up.

My old car is on his site at http://www.sportauto.cc/inventory_ferrari/1992_Ferrari_348_TS/index.htm.

(I really liked that car - in my family since 1995...)

I am going to change my profile tonight! It's def going to be a great summer, Michael - plus a great winter season as the big shows come through Fla and 49473 makes her mark!

    Forza,
    David

    Hello David,

    Congratulations on your great BB!

FYI, in the 1986/1987 Ferrari Owners Club roster, 49473 is listed as owned by P.J. Morgan, Omaha, NE/USA (just in case you didn´t already know that yourself)

I wish you many happy miles!

    Best regards

Here are a few pics of 49473. The first is the leaving NC, and the second is the morning of its arrival to me in Fla. Look at that shine!

I am planning on enjoying (ie: driving) my BB - albeit with respect to its concours past. No track days and certaonly some shows!

I'll have more pics when my new garage is finished... my BB will be happier there, and will be able to talk about how TC sucks, Poison rules, Senna drives like a god, and all sorts of other '80's barstool chatter with my other cars from the Me Generation.

that is a very kewel picture. what a profile!!! this is an appropriate time to say that "they just don't make them like they used to!"

although i am a biased boxer owner, i really think they are the last great ferraris.
