Got my car back from the dealer. Got 4 new tires and a bunch of other stuff. Charged me $200 for an alignment... And accidentally left the paperwork in the car from the actual alignment shop that did the work... I understand businesses need to make money, etc, but a $150 markup on a $50 alignment???

Joe, for tire stuff, it makes little sense to go to a dealer. Is there a reason you didn't order the tires yourself, then just take them to the shop for fitting and alignment?

Dealers will always mark warranted actions up, that's the business (whether or not it's cool or not).

Yeah my tie rod ends needed to be replaced and my steering box needed to be rebuilt (in addition to the tires). I would have done all that (most of that) myself but I couldn't get the damn wheel bolts off (they had torqued them down to an ungodly amount the last time my car was there a couple years ago).

Maybe that contributed to the bent wheels they found?

And now they want to torque them again 30 miles down the road. Hope that service will be free.

Did you point out your findings to the dealer? I have never had luck with a dealer especially with the age of our cars. They are mostly trained for warranty and service work on the newer models. I have removed my car from two dealers because they either couldn't get the car finished or their prices were way out of line. You need to find a reputable independent that specialises in Ferrari that you can develop a relationship with and ultimately trust.

I had a loose and rattling driver's side window on my 550. Local Ferrari stealer diagnosed a bad regulator at the cost of $2800. I had the window fixed for $80 at my own Ferrari mechanic who noted two bolts had fallen off. And no this sotry is not an exaggeration.

Ferrari dealer complete brake refurbish and clutch job will set you back well over $10k or you can do it yourself in 2 day’s and $2k tops. Dealer oil changes are about $700 and that’s before the filters were impossible to find.

Was the alignment shop an hour's drive away? Sheesh. I get it, I guess. Someone had to take the car to the shop, you don't want the car wash guy driving it, then someone had to bring that driver back, then rinse and repeat for the pickup. That could be two guys, two hours, right? Unless. like my dealer:

They had an alignment guy right across the street that he used.

Eventually the dealer put in some high end alignment stuff and did it in house.

For older cars and simple tasks many dealers sub the work to other shops(fluids, alignments, etc) since warranty and new car customers tend to be priority. My local BMW dealer sends extra work to a Shell gas station across the street from the dealership.

I was hit with a similar inflated alignment charge from an independent Ferrari specialty shop in MD who charged me $400 for the alignment, when called out about it I got the most amazing BS story of how complex the suspension is...

A Hunter is what, about $25K? That's a lot of $200 alignments before it's profitable to have one in the shop.

Do you have a breaking bar? Once I got one, I haven't met a bolt screwed on by an impact wrench that I couldn't undo.

I sure it’s more corrosion than torque that make these things so hard to remove.
