There are probably exceptions. Jim Clark, undoubtedly a legend, was a quiet, self-effacing man, not a 'larger than life' character, and he would probably not have shone in today's media obsessed world. His driving did the talking for him.
As I have previously posted, drivers such as Fangio, Moss, Clark, Lauda, Villenueve, Senna and Schumacher can all be considered legends of the sport, but unlike Lewis, not one of them was in the sport for the fame or celebrity status, only the glory of winning. Lewis on the other hand seems to place a massive importance on the need to be seen as a major celebrity, and is almost desperate to be famous, in the same way as David Beckham does. They've got the talent but their ego's are such that they seem to need everyone else to constantly acknowledge their greatness in order to feed that ego. The true greats of the sport, such as Clark, didn't need others to feed their ego's, because they were only ever interested in winning and not the fame!
I don't agree, why do think he craves attention?, he is doing what probably 90% of lads his age are doing, it is a media obsessed world we are living in right now. Clark Moss ect are a world apart from what's going on now, it's like comparing apples and oranges. I think what you really mean is, whatever he does or achieves will never be good, or great enough in your mind, however you are certainly not alone with that. It beggars belief to me..the fact he is one of the most talked about and polarizing figures in F1 right now by admirers and foes says it all to me. For the record I'am not saying I like the media obsession stuff, one of the reasons I like Kraftwerk, however ironically the more they became secret the more folk wanted know about them.
I don't think Hamilton is in the sport because he wanted to be famous. He started as a kid and generally kids do something because they enjoy doing it and get a kick out of it. If they are lucky they find something they are very good at, something they can make a living out of, as Hamilton has. I've not seen anything to suggest Hamilton 'needs everyone else to constantly acknowledge his greatness'. He does seem to live the life of a celebrity, a lifestyle that would not be everyone's choice, but I think that's because it's the life he enjoys rather than because he is desperate to be famous - he has been famous for years now. As mentioned by someone else, Hunt lived the playboy celebrity lifestyle, but in his case that was considered to be 'character'.
I sincerely doubt it. Button has proved himself in rubbish cars and good cars, and his cool friendly demeanour wins him fans. He has never pretended to be the second coming of Jesus Christ, he has got on with the job of driving for whatever team he has had the good fortune to be at. He had his brief misunderstanding with Williams and Honda, much played up by the media of the time, but otherwise took his medicine and concentrated on the job. Elton on the other hand moans and whines when he doesn't get his way, publishes secret team data on his Twitter and Facebook feeds, and generally becomes a PR nightmare to get his way. I very much doubt Jackie Stewart would expect either man to get a knighthood, but Elton will likely get one as a result of the statistics, not because of his demeanour or attitude.
I always thought you WERE in kraftwerk, with the musical references and lyrics here and there........ That clears that up then
I wish, Kraftwerk = The Electronic Beatles. I like innovators, high tech, space exploration ect , I love music and the Beatles, so you can now add them to your despised list. It is one of the reasons I like F1, for new ground breaking stuff, I'am not into racing Dinosaurs, there is a historic racing series to cater for that.
Pssst - Vettel is a character. F1 is sanitized and sucks for that reason on this front. "I'm going to get pissed tonight" -Vettel @ Malaysia "What's the point of grid guys?" -Vettel @ Monaco "What would have made Austin better Vettel?" "Cheerleaders." Vettel @ USGP
Yes short memories, ask Webber why he gave him the middle finger. The thing is, folk pull out whatever they want, and take it out of context to bad mouth someone they dislike. For me, as with all the top drivers Vet Ham Alonso, they sum up the below. Show me a good loser, and I'll show you a loser.
Good points but...... you seem to have forgotten to mention the greatest driver of them all (and I see that you used the phrase "some of the greatest drivers"); I am referring to Alain Prost of course. Almost a great post my friend keep up with the great posts!
The statement he made was that Vettel is flat and boring, that is what I was responding to... ...and I've never been critical of any driver or athlete for showing emotion when they lose. I agree with your statement. I always find it comical when people criticize Hamilton because he didn't behave "properly" in a loss. If I wanted to watch a robot do an interview, I would tune in for more golf. But I have no idea what any of this has to do with anything I've written honestly.
I'm sure my musical taste differs from yours, but I won't worry about personal judgements, I'll leave that evidently to you
Good thing you brought this to the table. See what young Max has to say about Hamiltons "domination"; Verstappen vertelt hoe goed Hamilton is video » Autojunk.nl (154685)
I just dont understand this kind of comment. Jackie Stewart and Niki Lauda have been there done that, and know F-1 in and out. Not only from driving - but they have had Long, Long Careers in F-1 as former Drivers... who else can say they have been around the sport for 50 Years? Lauda for 40 years... I know the cars are different etc... but if anything given each of these guys natural talent and drive - they would be just as good today as they were then. I have more respect for what ever Jackie Stewart or Niki Lauda say than Hamilton or Rosberg ... or Vettle for that matter. Stewart only had a dominant car in 69... with Lauda having one in 75 and 84... but their cars were nothing like Mercedes dominance... These guys have earned deep respect and can say what they like.
Te more i look at hamilton the more he reminds me of mansell...but mansell could do awsome things from time to time, Elton makes less mistakes and is more consistent (although he brain fades from time to time) but he lakes the pure talent Nigel had...in the end they only really showed in dominant cars......as i said before, hamilton as yet to show true talent in a medium car...SEb as already done it.
Makes sense. Max really presents himself well in interviews - really impressive for such a young man.
These guys need to do a charity karting event at the end of the season so we can all argue about that. : P
Hes rambling nonsense to get people talking about his take and it's working. To not think a 3x wdc is great is crazy.
Depends on how much of those wins is down to your own skill versus the car. Elton has only proved he can beat Nico mentally. To be honest, it's scary to think Nico is not as mentally strong as someone who used to crash because his girlfriend told him she had a headache the nite before, but I suspect it's not eltons mental prowess, more the subjugation of Lauda and toto that is really doing the damage to Nico
