Im doing a bunch of detailing work to the Daytona while I wait for re-originals to receive the new interior parts I ordered from Italy.

I want to put the car up on jack stands so I can really clean and detail the engine bay from underneith as well as above. I am repainting all the wrinkly finish parts and cleaning everything else up. Its pretty tidy already... but I really want it to shine.

Problem is, I have never put this car on jack stands before! I see the factory jack point behind the front wheels on the frame outrigger. I was planning on jacking from there. But where to place the jack stand? Should I jack the car from under the front cover plate where it attaches to the front crossmember and use the jack points for the stands?

Where are you other Daytona owners jacking from and where do you place the jack stands when you know the car is going to be off its wheels for a couple of weeks?

    Hi Terry,
I use a Walker floor jack, as it's lower than others like Sears, etc. Slide it under the center of the nose and catch the main crossmember. Use care not to catch the brake pipe junction on the front side, or timing case on the rear side. If the jack won't go under without scraping the nose pan, use a small scissors jack on one side of the chassis at a front jack pad to just raise the body on the suspension. Go back to the floor jack and raise high enough to get jackstands under at the two front chassis jack pads. Next go to the rear and place the floor jack under the "V" bracket on the chassis near the transaxle. Raise and place jackstands at the two rear chassis jack pads. If your jackstands are really high, you may have to do this process in two steps, a little at a time. Reverse the procedure to lower the car.

If you do not need to remove the wheels, and just want to get ground clearance to clean underneath, you could skip the jacks and jackstands and just drive the car up on to ramps. Many commercial ones are available, or you can make wood ones out of a series of 2x12s built a bit like stairs like this (side view):

I like the wood because there is no chance it will collapse and it doesn't slide when you try to drive up it and it's quiet too.

    Bill,

Do you remove the front undertray before jacking on the front crossmember? The undertray covers the front crossmember and makes it pretty hard to get lined up on it perfectly.

I do want to get it up fairly high on the stands outside in the driveway. That way I can roll around under it after going to town with the de-greaser and hot water. I want to clean everything and guage how much work I have coming to really detail all the undercarriage and suspension this winter. For now, Im just going after the engine bay. This winter my goal is to restore the entire under side of the car.

    Terry,
Yes, I didn't mention that flat metal tray as nearly every car has had it removed and presumably thrown away by now. The tray does cover the frame cross member so it should come off. One bolt on each side into chassis, and three tabs on forward edge into bodywork.

Thanks Bill. My car does still have the tray. It appears to only serve one purpose: catch any leaking oil and hold it so it can mix with every leaf, dirt particle or other road trash to form an interesting sort of goopy paste. Perhaps I will clean the tray up, paint it up nice like new and then store it in the basement with the stock air cleaner assembly. Seems like the engine bay would have better air circulation without it as well.

I also wanted to let you know I found a source for some custom made air filter socks to fit the siamesed 40DCN velocity stacks and screens. I have a company making some up. They have a thin filter material at does filter to 5 microns that is formed into a oval shaped sock. The base is a nylon type "backpack" material with a draw string and lock. They fit over the velocity stacks and you can cinch them up tight. Easy on.... easy off when its time to look good.

    Ill post some pics soon.

    Terry,
Good idea on the tray. When I read your last question I went into the basement and looked next to the stock air cleaner to find mine. Great minds think alike. Attached is a photo of the screens my partner makes in his machine shop. Nice job with the siamese fit, but these are epoxied in place so they aren't easily removed.

I like those screens so much, I had to have some! Bill, great minds may think alike.... but you may be losing yours! You already had your mechanic make me a set, my velocity stacks look fantastic with the screens in place. I polished the stacks up real nice too.

Let me know if your interested in some of the air filter socks. I know your running the cold air box with a filter, but you decided to run without it the sock filters could come in handy.

    Hi Terry,
Just a senior moment I guess. He's sold quite a few and I don't actively get involved so I lost track. Please send me the sock info when available. Thanks.
