so whats the deal with these? are they falling apart like crazy and people want out of them or are they generally a damn good deal for the money? and the Mark2 vs Mark3? i think the mark3 started being built in 2003? so are post 2003 models better/worse...
    everyone says avoid Jags... but
0-60 in 5.2 seconds, in a 4 door sedan sounds mighty tempting...
also keep in mind I would most likely buy this car or a E38 BMW 7 series(current choice) for a road trip this summer and then sell it right after the summer is over

also size wise how are these compared to the 7 series and S class, ive been in one but not the back seats, all the pics seem to show it smaller than a 7 series...

I have one and love it...I've only had to do regular maintenance on it and replace a fuse for the window regulator. I have 95k on mine. Just make sure the timing chain tensioners have been replaced and you are good to go. The cars are VERY easy to work on so a lot of the dealer maintenance cost can be avoided ($1200 for water pump etc. vs. $110 and 15 minutes to do it myself).

mk2 and mk3 are completely different cars. Really reliable and way better than the 740i, i had both E38 and XJR. It's actually a pretty common question (E38 vs XJR) asked in this section, you can dig up with "search" function.

ha! that search term did it!, never tried that one

when you say the Jag is way better, in what ways? is the interior of the Jag really better than the 7?? ill admit ive only been in an XJ (2005 model) for about an hour or so... but i wasnt impressed

also keep in mind I had a E38 7 series for a similar trip 3 years ago and was very happy with the car, but im just seeing what the other options are out there and try something new, my "fail safe" is the 7 series, and if not that im just going to use the CLK we have, albeit very small it will get the job done.

the main areas im looking at are comfort, and ride. this car is only pretty much going to be used for a 2500+ mile road trip this summer and thats it. long term maintenance isnt really a major issue as the car will be sold at the end of the summer, so long as its up to date and last for our trip im ok with that.
