So, I like to tinker with restoring cars in my own right, nothing too expensive or too serious, and I am looking at a Jag XK120 for right around $11k Seems like a fun car to drive about in sunny SoCal, and something to do with my life for the next two years.

Anyone else try their hand on this particular car or have a horror story I should know about?

the only horror story that I have is, about 17 years ago I had the opportunity to buy 2 for $1500 bucks, with one of them running.

I love old Jags. That sounds too cheap, or a like a deal, depending...Is it in one piece, running, and street legal? I haven't closely kept up with prices but think very nice 120's usually sell for over $50K.

I guess a Jag of that era would suffer from the usual range of old car problems. In particular, I've always heard that electrical problems were common with older Jaguars, even when they were new.

What year, and does it have a 6-volt system?

Like the 330 GTC in late 1970's that I could have bought and easily afforded for $7000...we all have our horror story. Yours is pretty bad though. :(

Great cars, are known for cooling issues, ignition/fuel delivery issues, and if they are Smith's guages, plan on refurbing them every so often. You should check out the Jag-Lovers list. Of the XK120 models, the OTS (open two seater, no top) will fetch the most money wise as will the MC's. One of the best restorers of the XKs is here in Reseda, CA and someone worth befriending, though he's no longer in the business. I don't have his contact info, but you can probably find it on the Carnight website.

    Cheers,
    Sunny

Is it true that Jaguar came up with the number designations from the cars top speeds such as XK120 had a top end of 120
    XK140 had a top end of 140
    XK150 had a top end of 150
I can see 120 but find it hard to believe the 140 and 150. The XKE topped out at 150 I didn't think the prod. jags before it had as high of a top speed.

I believe this, it started with the ss 100, then i believe the last time it was used was for the 220 in the 90's.

Sunny, as far as other restorers, I will be trying to do as much ground work as possible myself (assuming I pick it up) but Reseda is not too far. It should be fun back and forth to Crystal Cove on the weekends, and if I get it I have a 10 year plan to either sell it at that point, or if my g/f gets serious, as an engagement/wedding present for her. ;)

Not quite. They were evolutions and the XK140 can reach close to 130 and the XK150 into the 130's.
