Hi My 67 S type is shuddering slightly on takeoff in first unless you are gentle with the throttle. Probably the first sign of the clutch on its way out? Also, strangely it is a lot harder to start in first with the clutch depressed, than with the gearstick in neutral and the clutch disengaged. Does this make sense? Doesnt seem urgent as rest of the gear changes are smooth. I have priced a complete clutch kit at about 200 pounds, but want to know if this is an engine / gearbox out job, or if the clutch can be replaced with the engine in place. Thanks Dave
Engine out. *****EDIT - just realized this says "S-Type"...not sure about those. With the "E-Type", it is engine out...since they share the same basic setup, it's possible it's engine out for the S-Type, but I can't be certain as that's a saloon (so possibly more room to work?).
When you step on the clutch you are forcing the crankshaft against the thrust bearings. The clutch release bearing on an old Jaguar isn't really a "bearing" at all, it is a carbon ring that presses against the pressure plate when the pedal is pressed. They do wear out if you spend a lot of time with your foot on the clutch pedal. The proper way to start the engine is in neutral, with your foot OFF the clutch pedal. I can't tell if your clutch is at the end of it's life (is there any slippage?). It is an engine-out job.
you might want to have a look at the clutch linkage, driveshaft and rear suspension before you assume the clutch is the problem. problems in these areas could cause a shudder too.
