I'm thinking of buying one of these in the 95 and later body style. Was wondering if anyone knew of anything to look out for with these cars.
I wouldn't suggest it for 3 very strong reasons: 1) Depreciates quicker than any other car. 2) Mantaining the Jag will probably cost more than the price your paying. 3) Your paying for a fancy Taurus.
Great cars, '96 & '97s. Look for the last two years of the straight 6 engine. There are/were problems with cylinder liners in the V-8 engined '98-'99s and should be avoided unless the engines were replaced. The ideal car would be a '97 Vanden Plas: stretched wheelbase so the back seat passengers get a limo-like ride. They have depreciated down into the low teens price-wise. I've had my '96 for almost 2 years and have had NO mechanical problems, despite about 2K in miles a month. The straight 6 cars enjoy lower maintenance rates because you can get to everything important, unlike the much more crowded V8 engine compartment. Gobs of torque!! When I nail it, the car really seems to pull like a mutha! A really rare car would be a supercharged VDP! Murcie...XJ6s are on their own chassis. You may be thinking of the "baby" Jag, the X-Type, which shares a platform with the Ford Mondaos (sp?). Ike asked about mid-'90s cars which have already seen most of their value depreciation. KevFla
Ike Being a former jag xjs owner, I'd say that they're fun cars, just make sure you drive them. They're probably the best riding cars for the money. The depreciation is horrible so make sure you don't pay too much for your automobile.
I had a 95 XJ6 and drove it ~80k miles, great car. I liked it so much, I replaced it with an '02 XJ Sport. The XJ6 was relatively trouble free and never left me stranded. Find a good independant to do the maintenance work for you, it'll save you some big $$$. The body style that they introduced in 95 ran through the 2003 model year, so it's still relatively current. I wouldn't worry about depreciation at this point, it's already lost the bulk of it's value by now. My '95 sold last year for about $12k as I recall. Be prepared to buy tires, I had to put 3 sets on mine in 80k miles. My new car is now on it's third set of rear tires, and the car only has 32k on it.
