I think you may be right. It is possibly 500 Mondial 0438 MD. Where's BryanP?

Also, notice that there's what appears to be a Scaglietti-bodied Ferrari in the background of one of the other photos.

0438MD was run at Santa Barbara in 1955 by Bill Pringle under race number 75. Here's a photo of 0448MD at that same event. Does this look like the same time/place as the James Dean photos?

The windscreen on the James Dean pictures is the same than 0438MD at several 1955 and 1956 events.

Guess that pretty much seals it up. We were right on with 0438 MD.

Thanks, Guys. Now my Porsche friends are happy to find that Jimmy was looking at another 4 cyl race car, 4 cyl like the Speedster he had just blown up that day. End of story. Brad

I do believe you all are correct w/ S.I Mondial 0438 - I also think we have another pic in our stash of Dean in this car - I'll try to locate and post tomorrow. The other Scaglietti-bodied car Wayne noticed looks like one of the Doheny Union 76 blue cars - 0502M, or maybe even 0546LM that Ernie McAfee was killed in?

It definitely has the paint scheme, with the white stripes running along the shoulder and then down between the headlights and grille. I don't think 0546LM would have been with Doheny at the time of this race, so likely it's 0502M. According to Barchetta.cc, there is an image or mention in Ferrari Year 1955. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but are these all of the Ferraris that would have been present?

    0438M (Pringle)
    0448M (Kelsey)
    0474M (Josie von Neumann)
    0478AM (Jack McAfee)
    0492M (John von Neumann)
    0502M (Ernie McAfee)
