I think it was on an album cover. It was stolen and the unqiue paint scheme messed with by spraying primer on it, but recovered.I don't think it was a name artist that did the paint scheme but it looked good to me. I was wondering if anybody knows when it was stolen, the whole story? It is in a rock museum but I'd be hard put to say if it's worth more brought back to stock white or pained by somebody nobody heard of.

Not sure, but pretty sure it was a cabriolet, not a Speedster.

And very sure you'd destroy most of the value of the car by respraying it.

Bitzman. Is this the 1st you have heard of this? Heck I think most here have known about this car since at least the seventies :)

It was at the Porsche display in the Carolinas this year. Here is a blurb from that event:

"In this photo taken Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013 a 1965 Porsche Type 356 C Cabriolet that once belonged to Janis Joplin is on display in the Porsche By Design Seducing Speed exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, N.C."

Not a Speedster... as others pointed out.

    Never stolen.

It was in some disrepair after she died. Her sister restored it but painted over the 'graphics'.

Later, her sister had the psychadelic paint restored. It now is in the R&R Hall of Fame but travels all over the country to car shows, etc.

There are several threads here about it...

What has you just bringing it up now? Ever heard of it before?

Didn't Jimmy Dean, the singer, television host, actor and sausage king, drive a speedster?

    :)

Seeing as Janis was deep into the California hippie scene, pretty much any artist friend of hers could have painted that car, however the Beatles (George & John) had their cars (Mini & Rolls Royce) painted by the scandinavian artist collective known as "The Fool", who also painted Eric Clapton & Jack Bruce's instruments, and one of Ginger Baker's bass drum heads when they were in Cream together. Could have been them, too.

I owned a convertible D, which I was told after I sold it could've been
fitted with a Speedster windscreen to look like a Speedster. I brought it up because I was trying to find out about Grace Slick's Beutler convertible, what she bought it for or sold it for but then accidentally ran across the more colorful Joplin car. If it has twin grilles in the rear I will know it's a C. I'd also like to know what Janice bought it for or sold it for.
The Beutler car which doesn't look like a 356 at all, is for sale at RoadScholars, a dealership.
The biggest thing I noticed about 356 cars is that they have gone through the roof on price there is a shop in Orange County CA advertising a Speedster of rover $200,000! Man I think I sold mine for $4000 or so.

You can tell it's a C or SC Cab by the wheels and windshield frame. All C/SC's have twin grills including Carrera 2's. All roadsters are T5 or T6 356B's.

Her 'Roadie' painted it, and designed the scheme.
