In the promo video he says he didn’t drive it and enjoy it enough, and he thinks it’s time someone else does. Someone else with more than 25 million to spend, evidently…
IF we circle back to Marcels statements on the Ferrari triptych offered in 2024, apparently Dana Mecum buys these lots and wants to keep them but also understands the publicity value of offering $10+mm cars at his star auctions. Thus he picks a number where he would be happier with the cash, and any bids below that, he takes it home. He did this with the 250 Monza #0432 which was supposedly bid to $20mm but didn't sell so #917-020 is the fourth car to be run through. IDK if its a good business practice but I am not Mecum....... I dont believe there were any real bids
One can also ponder what is the publicity value of having some of these special cars in the auction. More press for Mecum as a "desirable" auction venue? More people at the gate to see something so rare? Better hype for the TV broadcast? Does it move Mecum up the ladder for high value car consignments, if not immediately then over time? Does the no sale at a high number bump the value for a future sale?
4 of the 5 no-sales were from the same consignor that is very close with (Dana) Mecum. The value of the publicity of offering these blue chip cars is brought up often, but the flipside is the reputational cost of essentially never selling any of them. Who in their right mind would consign their $5++ million dollar vintage Ferrari with Mecum, based on their track record with that level of car? I suppose the business case might stand on its own if it looks flashy enough to hook another 50-100 muscle car consignments (assuming those consignors aren't noticing the big stuff never sells), but it seems like a pretty sure fire way to insure you're never in the running to sell any cars of that stature that you haven't already stroked a check for...
IDK. I understand the 917 must have bought in millions in free advertising but the basic Ferrari like #0899GT and Porsches like 718-029 don't bring in any value and there must be a different reason they keep getting offered, claimed to be sold and offered at the next big Mecum sale........
I had to turn off Mecum after 5 minutes.....the stupid "auctioneer" fast talking drivel was horrible. Were cattle up for auction there? Give me the European approach every time.
Sure, free publicity and all that, but he's now holding a lot of $$ in stock which ironically is being made harder to sell because every time a car like that doesn't meet estimate it becomes "burned" for a little while. Can you imagine how bad it would be if he had to sell them at a competitor's auction a few months or years down the road? Probably best to stick with what works.
In January 1991 or 92 I attended the Scottsdale auctions...I thought the ridiculous babbling chap was a comedian before the actual auction....no.... I left.
3.77 m ( close ) . Good looking car ! Still quite a difference between this number and sale of 0983 @ 5.20m last year.
0893 had a great fully documented race and owner history, still had all its original drivetrain and had just completed a total cosmetic and mechanical restoration by knowledgeable people.
This was an ex-Letterman car that sold to the consigner at Mecum Monterey in 2023 for $1.5 plus fees, with that in mind, 1.4 isn’t too far off the ball, however there was no money in the room for it at the time.
Right. They will never really have the standing among their peers to represent our cars. Untrustworthy. Inaccurate. Fine for muscle cars and big auction theater...if that's what you're after. Run, don't walk to Gooding or RM instead...
What does this portend for the sale of 5893?[/QUOTE] Agreed. I would have thought 70MM Euros for this car, not the high end of ‘GTO money’. Will be interesting to see how 5893 and the other IMS lots sell.
I disagree. I think a GTO in today’s market will struggle to make 50 million Euro in a public auction. I’d bet the 250LM will sell for less than this Mercedes. Like 50% less, I’d say. We’ll see. Strong result either way - according to RM the second most valuable car ever sold at auction…
