Japan: YouTube Ferrari driver faces speeding charges.

A doctor in Japan has landed himself in trouble with the police after posting footage of his drive in a Ferrari sports car on YouTube.
He is facing charges of exceeding the speed limit after the footage showed him driving at 124km/h (77mph) in a 40km/h (25mph) zone, police say.

The 50-year-old doctor, from Okawa in Fukuoka Prefecture, was reported to police by angry YouTube users.
He reportedly said he "wanted people to understand the beauty of a Ferrari".

The six-minute video is titled "Ferrari 458 Italia Drive in Japan 2011" in Japanese, and was filmed using a camera positioned behind the driver.
It shows the car leaving an underground car park and driving along highways and coastal roads in Fukuoka, southern Japan, on the morning of 24 April 2011.

At least 84 people marked dislike under the YouTube posting, compared with 19 likes.
Police said they were tipped off about the video in May and began investigating, the The Mainichi Daily News reports.

According to the newspaper, the police determined the speed of the car based on the distance covered and the time elapsed.
A police spokesman told the AFP news agency that the driver was identified from the footage, and he could face a six month jail sentence or a fine of up to $1,220 (£778) if convicted.

After watching the video, he is a little dangerous when he crosses over the center line several times.
There's no oncoming traffic when he does it, but still, not a good habit when driving fast.

Interesting to watch a LHD Ferrari going fast on the left side of the road.
Not something we see much here in the USA.

Plus, he's got a great looking pair of red driving gloves on. :)

Seems a little bizarre that 1) the police went to that much trouble to arrest someone for going 77mph on a fairly empty road (in the US I can't imagine us dedicating that kind of resource to catching a speeder, even if they were going 200mph like the video of the F40 several years back); 2) that the video got so many dislikes... I feel like people watching driving videos on youtube aren't hating on Ferrari videos or reporting speeders to the police 3) the possible outcomes... 6 MONTHS in PRISON or $1,200 bucks... that seems like a pretty immense disconnect right?

Is speeding more villainized in Japan than the US? Did he give some obnoxious commentary along with the video?

I will admit that LOOKS like it would be a lot of fun, until you realize its not a video game. Then you realize that those conditions were not controlled, so it was entirely too dangerous to do that sort of thing.

    Not cool....

I can't believe the police bothered to go after him .. it isn't like the Japanese guy many years ago that posted a video in an F40 doing +300km/h ... whilst HOLDING the camera!

That last section reminded me of the skyline route heading to Hakone near Mt Fuji, except that is 2 lanes wide and only one way. One the best pieces of driving road I've ever been on and you can really do some high speed apex corning. Ah I miss those Japanese roads (& no I never picked up a speeding ticket)

^^ he should have learned from the F40 owner, but he at least sold a bunch of DVDs to cover (some) of his eventual fines.....or, simply place the vid-cam on the dash, so the driver can't be identified ;)

That's one of the funniest things about Japan. Speed camera's not only need to identify the car, but also the driver visually .. so when I went driving I'd always wear a cap with the peak pulled right down. I also discovered that traffic police generally won't bother pulling over a gaijin, as I got stopped a few times only to be waved on again once they caught a look of the foreign face.

In California, depending on how fast over the posted limit your speed was determined, your car is impounded a mandatory 30 days. It's an officer discretion call, sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.

In Los Angeles, if it is determined you are street racing, exhibition of speed, etc. Government seizure of personal property comes into play. The car is seized and crushed. Jail-time is included in the package.

It's always good to arrest someone to set an example of what you're not suppose to be doing. The problem is, that people see videos like this and say, "Hey! I want to make a video of me speeding on the road too!" And then before you know it, you get a bunch of dangerous yahoos on the road making their own video.

We all know that people speed. Filming yourself speeding or driving dangerously and posting it on YouTube is just stupid.

The guy has been found but I don't know what sort of fine he had to pay.

Takes his hand off the wheel and reaches for something at about the 56 second point in the video. Not that big of a deal, but still a distraction.

I'll give you guys a little hint

If you're going to break the law, don't record it. If you have broken the law, don't put it on YouTube.

    You can thank me later.

Actually, what I suggest is that you do put it on, but use someone else's name when you post it. Someone you don't like, who happens to own a Ferrari.
