Great video with Jay and Donald driving a couple of cars. There has been a lot of promotion for the Audrain Museum out of Newport, R.I. and they just held what looked to be a magnificant. And I recently learned a instigram friend does a some motorcycle videos for them. The never really knew about the region's magnificnt estates there, being a left coaster. Of course they don't get every detail perfect but so many cars pass through these guys hands, how can they. Jay has always shown a resistance to owning ferrari's but he usually enjoys driving them - and he really seemed to enjoy the GT4! The GT4 is about half way through the video.

    So (you Italiani) is it:

BEAR-tone (like these guys pronounced it)

    or

    bear-TOE-nay?

PS If Jay thinks a 308GT4 is a no-power-assisted "man's car", try driving a TR with a small steering wheel ;)

Osborne did train as an opera singer in Italy for many years. He might know more than us. It would be great if any Italians or those more intimate with the brand can chime in. I always say bear-TOE-nay . My So Cal step dad always said Ber-toe-nee HAHAHAHA!

Perhaps it would be a great poll question!

Please add dashes to separate the syllables and capitalize the emphasized syllable (seems like it would have too many pronounced "n" if bear-TONE-nay). I can see how bear-TONE-ay and bear-TOE-nay are very similar (especially when said quickly).

bear-TONE-eh! would be the Canadian pronunciation.

I would agree that when I wrote "ay", I could have also written "eh" as being the same sound (but not like how Canadian says it ;)).

    Actually

Bur - Tone - nay. That is how an Italian like me would say it

OK, but please clarify the emphasis -- Is it:

    BUR - tone - nay

    or

    bur - TONE - nay?

(At least there's no "g" in it ;).)

Not really much help ;) -- that sounds like berrrr-TOE-nay to me. Thanks for your comments (in any case, I'll be way closer to correct than what's in the video).

Behr toh neh (insert Jay's faux italian accent)

The GT4 has a heavier clutch and steering than a TR ;)

Understood. We had a similar discussion a few years ago about how to say "Scaglietti", and I'd swear that even the same Italian person (Luca Di M.) never said it quite the same way twice, and a lot depended on where it was in the sentence and what words preceded it or followed it. Also, we concluded that a person whose primary language is English could never do it quite right ;).

Gotta say that I admire Leno for his collection and passion for cars but when he opens his mouth I stop listening. He just makes things up. I'm surprised too at Osborne with his "I'm sure Porsche learned a lot making the 500e and it found its way into the 928." The 928 was introduced circa '77 and production came to an end three years after the first 500e rolled out of Stuttgart. I doubt Porsche was doing much development work the last 3 years of the 928's run. What they didn't focus on with the 500e was its acceleration from 60 mph. These things are "rocketships" at speed but anyone who has one or has driven one knows the zero to 60 time was pretty lame even by 1992 standards. It is encouraging though to see that someone finally got Leno to pronounce "POR-shuh" correctly.

Sometime it is not only matter of pronunciation but intonation . Italians talking is like singing , waving up and down with the accents over the words.
Nuccio Bertone sounds like Nu^ -cciober-to^ -neh ( e like Emil)
