Could anyone suggest CD albums or individual songs that contain a certain criteria? Looking for trio jazz music played with only: * piano * string bass * drums * no vocal Any input, topic discussion, or variation suggestions other than the piano(ie, trumpet, clarinet) would be appreciated

I was at a George Shearing concert in Ft. Lauderdale (Bubba's) the night John Lennon was murdered. I suggest going to iTunes and listen to snippets of songs to get an idea of their respective "sounds." Shearing's warm sound is unmistakable! Jarrett is too "cold" for my tastes. One of the aspects I love most about jazz is how the same song (standards) can sound so different, depending on the artist performing it. KevFla
I will get back to you on this. My son has a lot of connections. A good friend of his is the principal trumpet player in the One O'clock Lab Band at UNT in Denton, Texas. It is known as one of the premier jazz study centers in the world. Lots of jazz artists come and sit in with them from time to time. I am sure Micah Bell will be able to give you a good list of people to listen to............ I might suggest these: To start with http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikMz1IAHoXM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKBj_md3ZzM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnaMWISB5mA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-r47D-YQFZY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gH2P3T71lM8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXbAzcGmfXA
R.I.P. Passed away Thursday afternoon in San Diego from pancreatic cancer at age 85. Was truly a humble man and a hell of a musician! KevFla
I can't believe no one has mentioned Oscar Peterson... in my opinion, the best there ever was. Ever. Mike
Agreed, +1 Also, Ahmad Jamal. Some more modern trios that I quite enjoy: Brad Mehldau Rufus Reid (He's not so modern, but the trio he's playing with now is.) Robert Glasper The Bad Plus Trio (They're hit or miss with me.)
You guys are the best, thank you! Suggestions: Hank Jones / The Great Jazz Trio - Favors 1977 Brad Mehldau Trio Rufus Reid The Bad Plus - Everybody Wants To Rule The World The Bad Plus - Lost of Love hit it dead on, amazing music! As I went down everyone's suggestions, found great pieces I liked too, smooth jazz, and some alternates, really enjoyed hearing these new(to me) amazing works. Now off to go buy. More suggestions are welcome!
