This seems to be a cult car - and my wife has joined the cult, acquiring a bright red 1985. I don't really understand the appeal, though I can see it as a fun farm or beach car - I guess.

Anyone own one of these? The steering is horrendous - constant correction is needed to keep it moving in a straight line. Is this floating around part of the charm of the JGW experience?

I don't think it has any redeeming features other than being a cult classic and a rare sight. There's a fellow in Texas who specializes in them - I'm sure he could give you the whole story:

Seriously, I think the AMC days were the nadir of Jeep quality.

But, if your wife enjoys it, it's certainly cheaper to fix than a Countach.

Back in the day, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer was an "old money" vehicle.

Growing up just outside of NYC, you would see the Grand Wagoneer in the swankiest of communities. The 1980's BMW 7 series was another old money car.

I own one currently as a beater and basicly got it for free. Its an 89, blue with the woodgrain on the side and the door locks are a pain in the ass to open.

It burns gas, smells like gas. Its ugly but its really reliable, it gets the job done. The thing is really quick for being an SUV, the last SUV truck that I drove that was that quick was a 97 Dodge Ram 2500.

My plans are to keep it for now or possible trade it for a Ram in the future. I see no point on droping in any money on this monster.

I had an '87 with the very rare ASC power sunroof and very, very rare vinyl roof options.

Back when they were new, they had the demographic of highest average income per owner for American vehicles or something like that. Mine was over $30k when it was new back in '87.

I don't really think they're worthy of the what people pay for the restored ones these days, but they are cool vehicles.

I don't recall mine needing constant steering correction, but the steering is loose on them, as is characteristic of older American power steering setups.
