My girlfriend's 95 Jeep Wrangler is having problems. The other day it was leaking gas from somewhere above the tank. So I dropped the tank (NOT FUN AT ALL !!) and replaced the fuel and vent hoses as they were all dried out and cracked. I also installed a new fuel filter....a generic one (smaller than the original). After 7 hours of work I test drove it a short distance without problems. Great.....or so I thought. She drove it to work this morning with no problems....distance about 9 miles or so. But on the way home she only got about 2 miles when the thing lost power and would barely idle. Shut it down, got a ride to me...and we went back so I could at least drive it to my house to work on. Started up fine and I drove it about a mile when suddenly it slowly kept losing rpms until near stall. It was also bucking and popping as if starving for fuel. I babied it home, going up hills was nearly impossible......I could have walked faster.

Questions: The There are 2 fuel lines coming from the top of the tank, could I have swapped them and have the jeep still run? Would a fuel filter installed backwards cause this to happen? Could I have pinched the lines as I re-installed the tank? I'm gonna drop the tank down again.....but I'm asking for opinions on possible causes. Thanks Guys.....I appreciate it.

i know ABSOLUTELY nothing about the mechanicals of cars... Not next to nothing - ABSOLUTELY nothing...!

But what i just quoted above from your initial post reminds me of an oil problem i had with my Nissan Sentra a few years ago... Any oil problems with the car...?

When you dropped the tank did you empty the fuel? Is it poss. that you stirred up the sediment on the bottom and re-clogged the filter? Assuming FI, the injectors could be clogged as well.

My opinion on a possible cause is a bad fuel pump. If you had switched the fuel supply line and the fuel return line, I don't think it would have gotten her to work. Sounds to me like the fuel pump was on its last legs.

You might try over at JeepForum.com, they have tens of thousands of threads in their tech sections! And they would have some insights that someone who has never wrenched a jeep before might not have.

I think you might have swapped the fuel lines. Did that on a boat motor once and ended up with the same problems. But in my case, it wouldn't restart. If they are visible, see if it looks pinched (may not be obvious, depending on thickness of rubber)--that indicates reverse flow and partial vacuum inside. Otherwise, clogged or inoperative filter.

NNO, oil would have nothing to do with it. Lack of oil can cause other, very serious, problems though! :)

BTW, we usually need girlfriend pics before we can make a diagnosis. :D
