I have heard this rumor time and again. Even a shred of truth to it? Any other American drivers that might go F1 potentially? Hornish? Rice? Jimmie Johnson? Tommy Turdtoter?

hey man, keep this forum serious! Turdtoter has no more chance than his other Texas buddy, Pissdrinker.

I wish he would. I just think he's pretty tied up with commitments in nascar. Hendrick didn't seem to care for the idea too much from the interview they did with him either.

    Not according to Britney Spears....

JG is consistantly one of the best road course drivers. There's a thread on his car swap with JPM and JG did pretty well. He does have his detractors, and as Jeff Foxworthy says, it's because he's the only driver that you can understand what he says...

Its getting to the point where it does not matter what racing and competition background the American driver has. If he can manage to drive an F1 car around the circuit the sponsors will need to find him a spot in F1.

Just like Honda have culticated Takuma Sato as their poster boy, it will take an American corporation like Microsoft to get an American into F1. This is not really the right way to do things, but the fact is that just racing talent does not always get an F1 seat.

In all reality though, I do not think there is a single American driver ready for F1 yet!

When the pressed asked Jeff, he said "No way" and they asked Williams and he said "No unfortunately cannot afford him.."

    So maybe 2 No's = Yes

It seems that Gordon likes the idea but his owner and sponsors do not. After all, despite the success of the 48 team, Gordon was and still is Hendrick's meal ticket. And he is given about 20 million reasons ($$$$) a year to stay in the US. I could understand Gordon not wanting to alienate Hendrick by just picking up and leaving, but if Ferrari came knocking, who could say no?

I would make the move to F1 just to chase the girls in Monaco.

    Brady,

Aside from the fact that you cannot put together a cogent sentence let alone spell simple words, why don't you go back to your video games and stay out of adult discussions?

I love racing opinions from people who don't have driver's licenses, not. Oh well, junior high starts soon and shop classes will keep Brady busy for the next few months.

I suspect that Gordon might become an F1 team owner, but he's already way too old for F1 driving. Hey Brady, as a pre-teen, maybe you could try to drive a kart or something and maybe get to amateur racing, then you might have an opinion worth listening to.....or maybe not.

I think Eric hit the mark. Gordon is past the age where an F1 ride makes sense. His career is firmly set with NASCAR. He was quite a road racer when he was young and had set F1 as his goal. But NASCAR offered what he needed most which was a boat load of cash. I don't blame him, even considering the fact that I REALLY don't care for the manufactured soap opera that is NASCAR.

I personally feel he would be a decent F1 pilot. Like him or hate him, he is fast. I don't know if could run up front, but he wouldn't embarrass himself. I feel like he would perform much better than Michael, and less than Mario if he committed to it full time. I wish he had pursued his open wheel career so that we could have seen how good he could have been. He might have been truly great.

Does anyone know why he doesn't do any sports car racing? Even Dale Jr. does some sports car racing. I would think Gordon's skills would be sought after, and it would seem the sponsorship money he could raise would be quite desirable.

I guess I miss the days of Mario, AJ, and Dan Gurney, when they could drive anything with wheels, and win against the best of the day.

I keep wondering if F1 is really that stupid. They need someone like Gordon or an Unser or an Andretti. They need a recognizable American nameto help bolster F1. F1 is having trouble and they are being ignored by one of the biggest racing markets in the world, the US. Imagine a big name American team with say Andretti and Gordon or Earnhardt. It might light the fire under some of our fans to follow F1.

Sadly, I do not think F1 has ignored America. But Americans have ignored F1. We do not have the roper infrastructure and development program for American drivers that could go into F1. In Europe the ultimate destination for motorsport leads towards F1. In the US, the ultimate destination is NASCAR. F1 would love to have an American driver. The problem is that there is no American driver ready for F1, yet!

    Fully agree.

And it makes me sick to my stomach to read Yates' column in Car & Driver where he openly states, that he doesn't give a hoot about F1. Remarks like that will never help grow a fan base in the US. Maybe I'm reading the wrong mag.

Dave Despain had Edsel Ford on the other night and he said they were considering dropping the Jaguar team - but one option open was to come back into racing as Ford. That would begin to draw US attention, and a US driver (although none yet ready) and would really splash. There are not a lot of home name recognition teams for the US in F1; Even though Toyota, MB and BMW and Ferrari are there (and even Jaguar), I think a no kidding 'Ford' blue oval F1 team would be very interesting...

I would love to see in my lifetime, an American driver compete in F1 driving an American F1 team. I know we are close. Closer than most people think we are. Just a few more hurdles to pass.

    Hurdles such as:

    - Talent
    - Comittment
    - Money
    - Different treatment of drivers
    - Putting up with Bernie and Mad Max
    - The inability to get a decent burger in Europe. :D

Where there is will, there is a way! :)

I did not say it will happen overnight. But maybe after 2008, when the Concorde agreement expires and privateer teams can buy chassis from factory teams like Ferrari, an American team is possible. If teams like Minardi and Jordan racing can survive in F1, a privateer American team can surely be a possibility.
