Briton Jenson Button believes he is the best driver on the Formula One grid - and claims Michael Schumacher's success is down to Ferrari more than the German himself.

BAR-Honda's Button has underlined his credentials this season after scoring podium finishes in five of the last six races to take third place in the championship behind Schumacher and his Ferrari team-mate Rubens Barrichello.

Six-time world champion Schumacher has won six of the seven races this year, while Button is still searching for his maiden Grand Prix success.

But 24-year-old Button confidently said: "As a driver I think I am the best on the grid. If I have the equipment to win I will win, whoever my competition is. I've no worries."

"I still think we're probably a long way behind Ferrari but you have to admire his (Schumacher's) consistency - although when you are in the best machinery it is a lot easier. If you look at Ayrton (Senna) when Alain (Prost) came along he didn't have a choice as to who his team-mate was."

"That was pretty amazing to be able to perform when you've the other best driver in the world alongside you. With Ferrari now it is difficult to say. I think they get the same equipment, but nobody knows do they? Michael is just doing the best he can and he has won because he has been the best driver at the time."

Button, who claimed his maiden pole position at the San Marino Grand Prix in April, believes his BAR-Honda car will give him the chance of starting from the front once again in Montreal.

"Over one lap we seem to be quick but in the race we're a long way behind Michael," said Button, who is benefiting from improved engine power from Honda this weekend. "I fancy my chances of another pole - that would be great - but pole is only fantastic as long as you are on the correct strategy."

I understands and agrees that one needs to show confidence and pride within, if not, why bother even trying to do the things that we all do. But he should at least get his facts straight, it was Prost who was at McLaren first and it is rumored that it was Prost who recommended to Ron Dennis and wanted Senna to be his teammate. *L*

    LoL.

I have watching MS for a while, and now even after years of watching him, he still can still amaze me by completely and utterly 'owning' to every other driver on the grid.

Its like oh no guys hes mad, now you are in for it....

MS regars Button to be one of the stars of the future too. But Jenson's comments undermine his own stature.

    M. Schumacher has won 6 world championships, 76 F1 victories and 60 Poles. Jenson Button is still searching for his first victory after 73 GP starts.

AND LETS NOT FORGET.... MS WON IN A BENETTON. HE DID WIN TWO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN A CAR THAT WAS OF AVERAGE OR DECENT PERFORMANCE. I THINK JENSON 'THE BIG HEADED' BUTTON NEEDS TO GO READ SOME F1 HISTORY. MS has proved himself in an average car with Benetton and is now winning titles with Ferrari only after helping to develop the car for 4 long years (1996 to 1999). Shame on you BUTT (on) HEAD!

    Guys,

You are not thinking rationally. Every driver in a race HAS to think he is better than everybody else ... otherwise why even get in the race car.

That is the problem with most of the drivers today, they are beaten before they even start the car up ... RB especially.

I do not critise Button for thinking like this at all, infact I applaud this thinking and thank God somebody has the balls to still believe in himself. I maybe think Button should have kept it a little to himself ... but then publicing it is sending a clear message to MS that he is not intimidated like the other poofs of F1.

When I raced I definitely believed that I was the best driver bar none on the grid and that self belief is required to make those extra 100th's of a second better lap times.

This is for example why DC will never be fast enough, because he does not believe in himself enough. A racing driver must have unbending and amazing self belief otherwise he should not be in the car ... MS does and it looks like Button does!, fan-fncken-tastic we have 2 racing drivers on the grid in F1.

Here, here, Pete! Well said! Without ego, a driver is nothing.

And as I've said before, I'm faster than Button...although he'll be the next World Champion after MS retires.

It's one thing to think you're the best (which he is clearly not), it's another to say you are. One shows confidence, the other shows arrogance.

Mr. Schumacher has never once said he's the best driver in F1. Driving skill is not the only thing that Button should learn from Schumacher.

Find me a racing driver that is not arrogant about his abilities and you have found one that is not as good as the arrogant ones :D

Simple fact, in sport self belief and arrogance about your ability are important qualities ... maybe not best personal qualities, but who cares, if they win that is all that matters.

Great comment but I have to say that most people I meet think MS is an arrogant bastard, and full of himself ... ;)

Would love to see a quote where MS says he is the best driver in F1 Pete :)
Shoot us a link when ya do.

Eventhough he very well is the best, and has all the confidence that goes along with it, I have never, not a single time, seen him openly blow his own horn the way some of the other pilots in F1 do. To me, doing so only detracts from someone's character. It shows they have no humility, and are arrogant enough to openly boast of themselves.

I will add that Shumacher is always very confident, but never have I seen him be openly arrogant about it. All his boasting is praise of his team. Here is a great quote from an article linked here yesterday:

    Strasse,

I agree, but many non-motor racing friends of mine think he is arrogant, not sure why, but they do.

I also agree with the 'we' comment.

He is a pain in the ass to work with, I have been told. Very demanding and brutal of mistakes. Which is probably where the arrogance thing comes in.

hehe, hear his helmet slam against the back pit wall during Monaco?

I do agree though that MS is such a God in some's minds (not me!) because of Ferrari. Put MS in a Minardi, and he's gonna qualify 17th! He's a good driver, but too much of a german approach, not much creativity. I like Alonso much more! He is the best! LOL

Speaking of unjustified arrogance, go to F1-Live.com and take a look at Montoya's practise times! If he continues performing like this, I don't think he'd dare make another rude comment about MS again!

That idiot (JPM) does not belong in F1. He is still complaining and blaming the brakes of the car for his poor performance. I think JPM only learnt one thing in school, college and driving school... how to complain to pass the blame and how to whine about everything.

Firstly, I believe he does belong in F1. For the reason being that he does have enough raw speed to compete in the top third of the grid the majority of the time. But what I think has rubbed everyone the wrong way is his childish "spoilt-brat" attitude, outlandish stunts, excuses, insults, bravado, infamous press conferences, etc. He just needs to do his job; support the engineers, drive the car and win! Not, as you said, complaining and blaming.

Also, your mention of College... I doubt he attended. Most young racing drivers and other top athletes can't afford to waste the time. Especially with racing drivers, by the time they had finished college, they would have missed the chance to prove themselves in the lower formulas in order to get into the top catagories by the time they were in their early to mid 20's.

Button ought to keep his mouth shut and let his actions speak for him. Otherwise he will look like a fool--like Montoya. M. Schumacher bestrides the F1 world like a colossus. Most of the other drivers are pygmies by comparison. He has either been the world champ or the man one must beat to be world champ since 1994. Only when he retires will the ranks of second tier drivers such as Button have a shot at the big time.

Schumacher's success makes it easy for me to accept his attitude. Also, he is usually quite diplomatic when interviewed post race. So, until he starts sporting a rhinoceros hide whip and smartly clicks his boot heels before goose stepping to and from the podium while wearing a full length black leather coat, I'll accept any arrogance which he displays.

I do realize your point about college. I am very familiar with what drivers do as I have two friends going down that path right now. I disagree about Montoya though. he is only competitive becauseof the Williams car. Put him in an average mid field car and he would not have any pace whatsoever.

I have actually read somewhere that MS reckons, like any clear tinking person, that the best driver in the world isn't even in F1....don't know how he found out about me but man has he got some good scouts :)

I have a friend who is a freelance reporter who demonstarted to me that MS is far from arrogant by granting her an interview while celebrating his birthday in a hotel, iy was just a spur of the moment, I'm in the right place at the right time kind of meeting and a 10 minute interview was requested but she got over half an hour which is a nice demonstration of the man's generosity and ameniability.
