This story caught my attention over the weekend as it was not far from us, and he had come from French Lick KFRH, where we have been on several occasions, flying a similar flight path. He must have been a heck of a pilot from reading the article. Regarding "black boxes"-seems someone could develop something for GA that would help that could be up to date? What in the world happened to him? It is baffling to see people of this caliber crash unless it is health related or mechanical.

According to his website, Maroney has been flying in airshows for 38 years. He primarily flew in a plane called the de Havilland Super Chipmunk, which investigators said he was flying when he died.

Milwaukee television station TMJ reported in a 2011 story that Maroney was one of the U.S. fighter pilots with orders to defend Washington, DC after the September 11 attacks on the Pentagon.
