I heard his team mate will be Cassius Clay. The 34-year-old has been working hard at improving his capabilities on road courses, taking part in a number of Grand Am races in the Daytona Prototype class. He believes an F1 or even an IndyCar test would further allow him to further improve his technique. A left turn driver at age 34 in F1? Sure thing.
Not -to- F1. He says he'd love to drive an F1 car. For that matter, so would I. Doesn't mean I'm headed to F1, despite my cool suit and helmet. Doesn't mean -he's- headed to F1, despite his cool suit and helmet.
Here in the States we hear all the time how NASCAR has "the best drivers in the world". I'm sure he'd be great! Seriously, a 30+ driver who until a few days ago had never won anything on a road course should stay away from an F1 car.
Can you imagine the sound of Steve Machett or Hobbs saying "here come Jimmie Johnson coming up on the inside of Sebastion Vettel!" Sounds like a waitress saying "would you like some ketchup on you pancakes?"
I think a better "fit" would be Tony Stewart if he would actually "fit" into one of the cars. If I'm not mistaken he has a pretty decent resume on the road courses for NASCAR?
I'd love to see a NASCAR driver migrate to F-1 so we could settle the debate once and for all about "Which sport has the better drivers?". Just give me enough notice so I can sell off all my stock in Hardees, Lowes, Skoal, and Hanes Underwear (wife-beater edition), before the values plummet after the guy they sponsor embarrasses himself.....
There, fixed it for you. F1 drivers eat souffles, not pancakes! (at least according to Talladega Nights) Frank
Bingo! Which is exactly why this is not going to happen... Seriously, if you were an F1 manager would you want him "learning the ropes" in your @ $2-3 million chassis? Frank
PLEASE don't tell me you think all F1 jocks are perfect and have squeeky-clean backgrounds. How is this any different than any other rookie coming into F1? I also seem to recall a seasoned driver in the 80's crashing out of all but 2-3 races, or so it seemed. Jimmy won't go ANYWHERE without 1) Chad Knaus, and 2) Rick Hendrick, who was a helluva IMSA driver in his day.
Rumors are Montoya is looking to take Rossi's place at Yamaha next... http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/84766 RM
Also don't forget the Race of Champions events held in the past few years. If I remember correctly, Carl Edwards defeated Schumi head-to-head in equal equipment (although Carl Edwards likely lost later on down the line to an F1 star).
Sounds like a VERY slow day for the journalists. Rubbish... Guess they are bored today since nascar ran yesterday. Carol
In a racing format that allows and endorces body to body contact to create passing opportunities, many times durring the race, NASCAR drivers would easily beat F1 drivers. In a racing format where any body to body contact must be avoided at all costs, the F1 drivers would crush the NASCAR guys.
