Hey everyone, Looks like I'm three weeks away from graduating law school and I can't wait to walk across the stage. But I can't help but think about the fact that I (along with a good number of friends who are graduating) still have no job lined up and most law firms are either not hiring new grads or worse yet, laying people off. I'm actually having thoughts of going back to get a masters in engineering, but all I want to do is get a chance to work in my field. Anyone else experiencing hardships in connection with this economy/job market? Or if anyone has anything wise to suggest, I'm all ears. Thanks Yuri
Go back to school. I graduated in 1983 with a MSEE and wasted 2 years trying to find a job. I should have spent that 2 years getting a law degree or MBA. With engineering there are a lot of scholarships available so you can go to school for free. Learn from my mistake grasshopper.
The job market it tight, that is for sure. However, there is always a need for really good people. Having a degree is only half the battle. Employers are looking for people that can promote their corporate image, relate to customers, and basically be a team player to sell, Sell, SELL. You can look for employment, but that first job may not be in an area you are wanting. You may need to relocate to get that job, then with experience, move to an area that you are more interested in. Good luck. Oh, BTW, tatoos, long hair, etc....that makes you look like you just rolled off a turnup cart won't help you.
I agree with Johnny that having the degree is only half the battle. Case in point, my wife, who has an MBA from University of Chicago was recently laid off and is currently looking. On the other hand, I was in your shoes not too long ago. In addition to checking the usual places like Chicago Daily Law Bulletin for jobs, I took a Sullivans directory and found every firm that practiced in an area I was interested in. That's how I got my first lawyer job. Blind letter to someone I found in Sullivans. Good luck.
Thanks guys, While I'm open to the idea of relocating for some time, that is not at the top of my list. I also realize that I may have to start off in something other than my dream job. I am keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that passing the USPTO BAR exam will open a few doors that would otherwise be off limit. But I just have to wait and see for now. blabardi: If you don't mind me asking but how long ago were you job searching, what school did you graduate from, and what area do you practice in. Thanks Yuri
Oh, BTW, tatoos, long hair, etc....that makes you look like you just rolled off a turnup cart won't help you. If you don't have tatoos and long hair I will not hire you ( Serious). Preppy guys don't look good in my stoner rock band. LOL
What kind of business do you own where you have time to get a law degree and maybe another couple years of schooling in another field?
Worry about jobs later. Right now studying for the bar needs to be your full time job. If you're doing anything else besides studying (well, obviously take some breaks too) then you're making a huge mistake. You don't need to stress yourself out with the bar and looking for a job.
FPB: Before I worry about the BAR exam I still need to finish my finals. But I understand what you mean. The next 2 months will be nothing but BAR review. I am also trying to take the patent BAR within the next two to three weeks. BLAQK: I am guessing you're referring to me. I got my BS when I was 20, so I got out pretty early. I ran a computer support company for a number of years, but with the way certain things turned out in my life I decided to pursue a career in patent law. I will be turning 28 in a few days, and graduating next week. I don't want to call myself young anymore, but I do not have a family yet, so it's a little easier for me to do things like attend school. If it is up to me, I would have a job lined up already. However, many patent firms like to see post-graduate degrees in engineering. So if I am unable to get a job now, might be a good reason to go back for a masters and increase my chances.
