My girlfriend and I are moving to Austin after we graduate (moving around April most likely) and she needs to find a job to support us while I start my company. I know there are a lot of big companies there and nearby, but was wondering if anyone could provide some advice. She is very smart, high GPA (>3.7), Univ. of Michigan political science degree with honors. She is probably looking to get into some type of rotation program in finance, business, investment management or something along those lines. Wants to work normal hours (not insane IB hours) and have benefits.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated as we are moving there without jobs or knowing anyone or anything for that matter.

Thanks for any help or suggestions!

I don't think it's that nobody wants to help, but it's a pretty general question you asked. I also don't understand what you mean by "rotation program" or "IB Hours."

One of the challenges you'll face is that you're moving into a town where there are 50,000 students, and thousands graduate every year and will be competing for the same jobs.

Austin is a great place to live, Best of luck as you finish up school!

I am an engineering student and through my internships a lot of the companies put you in rotation to learn about the company, do different fields, etc. I assumed some of the bigger businesses around there like Dell would do the same for business-esque majors. Train you at the different jobs in 6 months block for up to 2 years then go to the one you want or are assigned. Maybe I am misinformed or it is only an engineering thing.

IB hours = Investment Banking hours = 100+ hours of work a week.

I'll probably be working somehwere close to that as I start my business, but let's just say she isn't interested in working that much.

I know I was vague, just looking for some prospective companies that may be a good fit.

    Thanks.

I would help if I could, but I don't know of anything.

EDIT: Call Dell and see what they will do for you. I don't know anything about that kind of stuff.

Finance companies will take you if you're smart, you don't have to be a business major. They'll train you what to do. A lot of business recruiters (looking to hire in Michigan) will take all majors with certain GPA requirements for interviews. Very few companies that are in business fields say you must be business. Heck, half of the business companies come to the engineering career fair.

Don't be limited by your major, it's just a title. No matter what you'll probably find < 2% of your school work is what you do at your job. I know that was the case at the engineering jobs I had, seemed as long as you passed the intelligence test they had no problem teaching you what they wanted you to know on the job. They even held workshops for this kind of thing.

I understand. Only made the comment b/c usually after graduation you are looking to at least apply some of the specific knowledge you just gained and not go in a seperate direction immediately. GL with the search.

Keep in mind what Farmer Boy said. Every year a huge crop of freshmen (and women) move to Austin. Four years later, they never want to leave. Thus, Austin always has too many professionals.

If you're looking for opportunities, Houston and Dallas are the places to be.

Ya, it may be tough for her to find a job, she's already worried about it. I'm sure she'll find something within a couple of months though. We want to be in Austin near all the young people and she loves Texas football. Texas is also a great place because we can afford a house, unlike San Diego, our other choice.

The funny thing about that is some of them end up working as bartenders, waitstaff, or retail (not because there’s anything wrong with that) after school for many years & struggling to make rent until finally landing a great paying job. Austin is a sink or swim town, It's up to you how look at it.

Btw, enjoy Hippie Hollow & good luck.

Another option may be to live in Austin and work elsewhere via telecommuting. I think there is a lot of that going on here. Austin is a great place to live but don't tell everyone. It's getting crowded here. By the way, the temps here this week were 108 on Monday, 107 on Tuesday, 106 on Wednesday but the good news is, it all feels good when you're buck naked at Hippy Hollow.

Thank god! Not the biggest fan of it. Anyhow, thank you all for responding, I appreciate it. As the time gets closer to move I'll post an update, stil got 3 months left of school, then going to hang around in Arizona for a bit, then move around April. Will probably take a few trips out there to look out houses before then.

Pretty soon I'll be asking about Austin's best neighborhoods.

Thank you all once again and I was recommended to fill out my profile a bit, so I did.

    Thanks,
    Brandon

Don't know what part of AZ you are in, but Chandler has a HUGE Intel facility and we have an Intel site here in Austin. Get online or drop by Intel and see if you can get hooked up with them for a position in Austin. Intel Austin is a small facility, but has Apps Engineers, Design Engineers, chip designers, etc...

My parents are in Scottsdale, but atually my gf is the one looking for a job, I'm starting a company. Not too many jobs where you can have a Ferrari and work for someone else. So I'm starting young, doing my own thing.

Like I said, she is a poli sci major so I don't think she'll be deisgning chips anytime soon ;-). Thanks for the lead though. Dell has a crap load of jobs she could do, so that may be the first stop.
