The Salzburg Rallye Club will pay homage to former Formula 1 world champion Jochen Rindt with the opening of an opera dedicated to the late Austrian driver.

The SRC, together with artists' network Lawine Torren, is producing an opera about the death of Rindt, the only posthumous Formula 1 champion.

The world premiere will be staged on of July 30th at the Salzburg Ring, Austria.

"As tragic as the end of this hero of the pop-era was, we remember him with the sentiment that he did not die for nothing," said director Hubert Lepka.

"Often, the triteness of his accidental death flagrantly contradicts the myths of heroism and redemption following him. Accommodating both at the same time, the simplicity and the uniqueness of this hero and his time, is our very concern."

Rindt died in an accident at the Monza circuit in 1970 and was later crowned world champion. He was 28.

Rindt was one of my all-time favorites. Jackie Stewert provided a worthwhile memorial to him in his autobiography.

I hope the younger generation of F1 fans will learn about him and remember what a great driver he was.
