Well, looks like John Deere finally backed down.

How will this impact the world of Ferrari? Honestly I thought it was the end of the world when the SD computers came out and they wouldn't sell outside dealers. Seems like in the past 10+ years that hasn't been a deal breaker for Independents or Individuals to work on Ferraris.

It’s a big deal for Apple product users as well.

Laws have existed for many years that for example require Ferrari to sell us SD computers but they are not enforced. It would require a law suit to protect our rights. We would win based on existing law that is being violated. The cost of protecting our rights and the small number of litigants involved makes it prohibitive. Not to mention law only says it needs to be available, not for how much. Its a legal win that cannot be afforded.

In the case of John Deere there are industry associations representing a great many members in the nations largest industry. Force of law becomes much more affordable.

good info, I didn't realize they had to sell SD's. maybe it was just when they first came out they were strict not selling them and trying to limit the resell on them. how many aftermarket versions have come out and are viable? just the Leonardo?

    Thank God!

I’m glad they finally came to their senses. It’s not right what they were doing to farmers, etc. Not sure it will cross over to Ferrari owners since so few venture outside the dealer now anyways. I hope it somehow will lead to more independent options but I’m skeptical it will. If Ferrari had their way you’d have to take it to them to put air in the tires.

To be fair, the warranty on the air is reassuring.

Well a month ago, we had to sit for 15 minutes listening to an Acura finance guy why we should pay them for going there to get Nitrogen in the SUV tires.

I love when they do that. I was buying a cheap car for my sister-in-law and they wanted something like $900 for etched glass and nitrogen-filled tires. I said #1, no one cares if they steal a used Ford Focus and #2, all tires are partially filled with nitrogen. He gave me a weird look. As I was getting up to leave he decided to "throw" it in since I was such a "nice" customer. This was about 7:00pm at night. I said the banks are closed, can I put a deposit on my CC and then pay the rest tomorrow with a bank check or cash. He said there was a $2500 max on CC transactions, guess he forgot to tell the cashier. She asked me if I wanted to pay for the whole car on my CC (it was abut 12k). Sure... So not only did I not pay $900 for dealer nothings, they got stuck with the 2 to 3% CC fee plus I got some points to spend on Amazon.

Ok, back to the original subject of this thread. The John Deere thing is so much worse than what Apple does. The "good", when the Russians "appropriated" a bunch of John Deere tractors during their invasion of Ukraine from an actual John Deere dealer, they remotely disabled them so they are only now good for parts. The "bad", when your tractor breaks down and your whole farm can't run because you are waiting on the "official" repair guy or a part from John Deere, you can't fix the tractor yourself or get someone else. This is why old John Deere tractors are exploding on the 2nd hand market. They are reliable and fixable by a 3rd party.

The Apple thing you can see both sides also. WIth the sensors and everything else in the phone as a single integrated security device, they can't guarantee that if a 3rd party screen is used it won't break their security model (i.e. steal information). Also with so many poor-quality parts out there, it can make someone think that their iPhone is a piece of garbage when it's the digitizer that was replaced with some knockoff. The problem is that if the 3rd party options don't exist, then Apple can set any price it wants on parts to make older phones not worth repairing so you MUST buy a new one.

Will Ferrari ever do this, I doubt it. There will always be things they do limit (i.e. proxy files for features that a car never had), but actually limiting the tools or ability to 3rd party repair, not worth it for them. They make money either way in most cases.

Any corporation that denies us the right to work on our own equipment is 100% wrong , there is no one is better than the other,
I’m all in Apple but there policy’s I’m disappointed with.
