Well all the geriatrics seem to want a thread to tell their stories, so why should JM be left out? An added bonus is, unlike PP, JM probably has some interesting stories to share.

My own thread!!!! I am truly honored :)
Does this mean I have leg-end status alongside Minogue & PP?

Before I make an absolute ass of myself, what are the ground rules? - Do I have to change names to protect the guilty? If someone is dead can I tell lies about them? Ditto, if they are still alive?

As a starting point - my first racing car - and thereby hangs a tale or ten :D
Hume Weir 1967 - and I had the number before Gilles!

Unfortunately, unlike many of the members here, I have yet to achieve anything of any real note. When I do, don't worry, I'll be sure to start my own thread and let you all know.

    JM nice pic, any more?

    Model:Mongrel Austin A30
Engine: BMC "B" Series 1800cc (early 3 bearing MGB)
DCOE Weber, cam, head job, etc
135bhp 148ft/lb - which was considered pretty good in those days.
Car lightened to the point of frailty - amazing what you can do with a hole saw!
Actually, the following photo was taken at Philip Island after we fitted fibreglass panels - outer guards, doors etc. Brock had some moulds made and we got a set. If you look at the pic, you will notice that a re-design on the top section of the door was required - they were just f/g skins with perspex widows - a bit too flexible.
Funny thing about those doors, the first time we ran them was the only time I ever finished in front of Brock - one of his doors fell off and he had to stop to tape it up!

    OK
Brabham BT35 at the Island - things had improved a bit - they actually had some armco separating the crowd from the action by now. This was taken from about the same spot as the previous A30 pic.

I used to love PI - Dad was a foundation member of PIARC and we used to go to every meeting when I was a kid - before most of you were born! (except Minogue :) ) It went through a major decline when the Armstrong 500 knocked it about so much in the early 60's and they couldnt get a hot mix truck over the San Remo bridge to fix it (old wooden structure in those days).
Eventually it re-opened with concrete patches repairing where the damage was done - created a failrly bumpy environment and the Brabham just loved it - lots of suspension travel compared to the Elfins for example.
My very worst experience there was when I was nearly blown into Bass Strait by Max Stewart - We occasionally used to race with the F5000's and on this occasion, Max came up behind me on the main straight - now I knew that I could take the sweeper (as we used to call it - now turn 1) flat. I also knew that the F5000's used to brake and were actually slower through the corner than an F2.
    Unfortunately, no-one told Max!
I judged that he was not going to pass me before the corner, based on what I could see in my mirrors, and was just about to commit to the turn when, WHOOMPAH! Max was inside me going about 20mph faster than I was. Anyone who has been anywhere near an F5000 at full noise will probably understand - the ground shakes, your teeth vibrate out of your head and the end of the world cometh!
Max made the corner, much to my astonishment, and disapeared off into the distance, leaving me ruminating about our relative skills and courage!

    Scared? .....................I s**t myself!

    Hi Greg
Mate, that was the demon tweak - all A30's did that - it helped cool the engine but I'm not sure what it did to the aerodynamics - couldn't afford to put it in the wind tunnel :D
