Since I now have a lot of free time, my cousin and I have joined the Red Cross and will be helping out in one of the DFW area shelters. I figured that I could do this pretty easily and that refugees would be able to relate to me more than someone from outside of New Orleans.

I encourage others to help out if possible. I know that many of us have also lost our homes and need help ourselves, but locals helping locals seems to me like how we Southern Louisianians help each other out.

Best of luck everyone, time to buckle down for the long haul...

Also, if you are reading this and thinking about helping out ASAP in NOLA, be VERY VERY careful. Let the National Guard do this job.

I was speaking with a fellow evacuee today and he told me a horrific thing. A friend of his sister trailored his flat bottom boat to New Orleans to assist in rescuing others. He went missing almost immediately, then was found shot and murdered only hours later. They recovered his boat nearby, full of EMPTY TV BOXES. No joke :(

    :D

    I can dig it partna!

Looks like I won't have that smokey gift I had promised this year, I left the humidor in my apartment across from the N.O. convention center!

Funny though, because I was looking in my car the other day and for some reason I had one of the FQC cigars from last year in a compartment. It will be smoked ASAP!

True enough, Wax, that's how I've always done it........

Susan Gibson (wrote "Wide Open Spaces for the Dixie Chicks), approached me once backstage, with...

"You seem to be a person of authority, in charge here..."

I said, "naaahh, but I DO have this voltage tester and a case of duct tape in the trunk"

She thought that was HILARIOUS! She's pretty cute, and that royalty money's pouring in.......

Im not so sure. My apt is literally one block away from that huge mass of people at the convention center. In fact, yesterday I saw a clip taken right in front of a watering hole near my building with several violent folks being arrested and held down as others ran from police. Very scary! Given that they are starving, I am sure they broke into the building looking for food. Which is fine with me. If I was in their shoes I would break into an apartment looking for canned foods.

But then I can just see others taking advanage of whatever is left in the apartment. But then again, if someone comes across my collection of Cuban cigars, I say F*ck it. If smoking them makes them forget their situation even for a second, more power to them!

We'll see, I am hoping I can go back to salvage what is left maybe in 2 weeks. That's if the city is allowing normal citezens back in during daytime hours.

I'll let you know when I hear from them. I was hoping to ride shotgun but they did not stop!!!!!!!! LOL!

    WHOOOOSH! Kinda like that.

Let me know if I can help, I've taken all the shots. Heck, it'll be like water skiing in Galveston Bay, south of Texas City!!!!!!

Thanks, I think I'll be ok at the shelters. I know exactly how to identify with most of these people and look forward to providing them with comfort.

Going to get all my shots done before entering. My cousin was an EMT in New Orleans prior to getting into med school and estimates that 20%+ of the poverty level citezens have some form of hepatitis, and at least 8-15% have HIV/Aids.

Another thing that will be interesting is that the Red Cross said that the DFW shelters are getting A LOT of the medical evacuees. As well as lots of elderly with needs and lots of infants, one as young as 10 days old.

This shall be a challange, but a worthy one!

    John,
Thats a very honorable thing to do.
I'm here in Baton Rouge and it is very sad to see all the displaced people.
I hope they have a way of seperating the thugs from the poor decent people caught up in this tragedy.
I just got my power back and was glad to see all the Fchatters made it through.

Get Richard to post the photos he took should be very interesting.

    Regards
    Chip

That's a terriffic thing to do John. It's horrible to see the looks on peoples' faces, but nice to know people like you are doing something to help them. Thank you, good luck and be careful.
