I can remember watching the French Chef on PBS when I was a kid (along with the Frugal Gourmet and Great Chefs of the World), probably started around age 10 or so. My parents aren't big time foodies, so my love of interesting and well prepared food certainly came at least in part from Mrs. Child.

Turns out her birthday coincides with our wedding anniversary, August 15th, so taking my wife to a Julia-themed dinner next Wednesday.

Anyone plan on doing something similar, or at least cooking up some of Julia's favorite dishes in her memory?

    BON APPÉTIT!

Fond memories of her whacky show on TV as a kid when mom was watching it.

Mrs. Jedi ended up buying the DVD version of the series, around the time the
movie Julie and Julia came out - we both learned to make "30 second French omelettes"
from Julia, and make them all the time now - great "midnight snack" that's FAST to make.

    :)

+1 IMO every kid should learn how to cook an egg well, something many people have no idea how to do.
I've recently changed my scrambled-egg routine to be more like Gordon Ramsey's: med heat (cooler than I used to use), stirring almost constantly so the egg slooooooowly and evenly heats up, removed from pan a bit before it's set. The result is almost custard like, but still firm enough that it won't seem runny.
Spooned over toast/english muffin/biscuits..... oh man I want some right now.

We recently saw this, Merryl Streep was great of course but I agree with Mrs. Childs, who supposedly had no interest in the young woman plowing through her life's work like chore, with little regard for savoring the results or putting much thought into the recipes.

Incredible dinner and celebration of Julia Child last night at Milwaukee's Grain Exchange!
Before each course a projected video above the band showed each head chef preparing the dish and talking about how Julia influenced their life and work, with photos and quotes of Julia interspersed.
We sat at a table with two other couples, just great conversation, superb food and excellent service by the Bartolotta staff. The whole room, and chefs, singing "Happy Birthday" to Julia was a very nice touch.
Hors d'oeuvre + 5 courses + 2 deserts w/ wine throughout was glorious overkill, we each took one of the filet medallions home for steak and eggs tonight. Bar none the most tender piece of beef I've ever eaten. Anchovy & onion tart was my favorite dish of the night, by a nose over the mini Croque-Madame.
Just downloaded "My Life in France" , and motivated to dust off our old copy of Mastering the Art of French Cooking....
    bon appétit!
